Family calls 911 after getting lost....

Let me tell you, it's pretty rough out here in the wilderness frontier of eastern Massachusetts. One turn down the wrong path, and you can be lost for days. Fortunately, we also breed tough, self-reliant people what do what they have to do to survive:

Family lost in Mass. corn maze calls 911 for help

DANVERS, Mass. (AP) Authorities in Massachusetts say a family that got lost in a seven-acre corn maze called 911 for help, apparently taking advantage of the police department's motto that says "We Want To Be Bothered."

The maze at Connors Farm in Danvers can take up to an hour to navigate.

A police officer entered the maze with a farm manager to search for the disoriented father, mother and two children. The family didn't realize they had almost made their way out and were just 25 feet from the street.

Farm owner Bob Connors tells the Boston Globe (http://bo.st/p7Xmzr) that they designed the maze so that people get lost in the long corn stalks.

Heh, I did a corn maze with the kids a couple of weeks ago. We made it out alive, but just barely.

In my family, we have a pecking order of who we'll eat first should we get lost in a corn maze for longer than an hour or two. My wife hasn't shown it to me, but she assures me that the system used to draw up the list was "fair and unbiased".

Why didn't they tell them to keep their hand on the right wall?

I hope they don't ask for a refund. After all, they got their money's worth.

Maybe they thought Isaac was going to send He Who Walks Behind the Rows after them, panicked, and called the cops.

Re: Family calls 911 after getting lost....

Back in the 70s we went to a haunted house set up in an old building for Halloween. There was a point where you chose between two doors. One door led to a maze. The maze was pitch dark. Everybody in there were lighting lighters to try and find the way out. Took us about an hour. Turned out the exit was the same door as the entrance. There was an article in the newspaper about employees finding people in there who had been lost for hours.

Now that is a creepy thought, trapped in a maze with dozen's of people while the place burns down. That would have gone down in history as one of the best cautionary Halloween stories.

Just think. This intelligent family would have died back in 80's without a cell phone to call for help.

Re: Family calls 911 after getting lost....

My wife and I took our kids into a corn maze when they were very young...which was a big mistake. By the end we were both carrying a child, not speaking to each other, and finally just pushed our way out when we saw the barn even though we weren't at the end.

We didn't, however, call 911.

Apparently, it also never occurs to anyone to shout for help.

Or just push your way through the corn rows towards the lights which in another story they said they could see. OR how about you climb up on your hubby's shoulders and look to find out where you are?

This is just the kind of business that should block cell phone transmissions.

Re: Family calls 911 after getting lost....

A few of mine friends went to this farm on Sat in wake of this story. They said it took them less than 40 min to get through the maze; and I guess the average is about 20-30 min.

I'm disappointed. I thought they got lost again.
