Does holding elective office for which I receive no compensation, monetary or otherwise, constitute "volunteer work?"

Re: Anyone here do Volunteer work?
Ive been thinking of doing this lately for a few reasons. I want to get out more and doing some good would be great. I also want to meet new people (mainly girls) and expand my social circle. Im in my 20s and worried Id just be working with older retired couples
But work has been kicking my ass and I need a bit of an excuse to get out! Plus Id like to pad my resume with stuff like this but the thing is I dont know where to even start looking to do volunteer work. I also have a bit of a fear that it may be great at first but Ill lose interest and give it up after a month. Any suggestions or ideas?
Oh and in case otters ask Id like to work with animals and the outdoors/nature.

I've done all different sorts of volunteering from delivering Christmas baskets to needy families to helping restore salmon habitats

Re: Anyone here do Volunteer work?
Thanks for the tips and help guys. Ive been meaning to reply and dive into this, but I got a promotion and been celebrating all week (yay!). Oddly enough I was with a friend of mine the other day and he told me that hes also been thinking about this lately! What are the odds. I like the idea about humane society and helping animals. Lately, Ive been meeting ALOT of girls who are single and dog lovers, so Im going to look into that. And Super, thats a great idea for the natural parks idea. I want to make that my future career and that would really help out.
Now comes the hard part... researching everything and getting numbers and contacting peeps

I've been going out to one of the flood ravaged towns near me, Schoharie, from Hurricane Irene one of my days off, just about every weekend with my Mom who lives there. She's semi-retired so she's been going 3-5 days a week to help out.

Re: Anyone here do Volunteer work?
So I did the deed and contacted NPS and I sent in my form and I will have a meeting soon to see what I can do. I also tried the Humane Society but they were booked for the month! I guess they got a shit load of peeps wanting to do that.
