Wedding/reception planning ideas please

So she said yes (proposal thread), and like irrational loons we set a wedding date for about two months away. No we're not pregnant, just want to start our lives together.

My ability to procrastinate is epic-sized, but we're aiming for a fairly small and casual wedding, so hopefully it will come together okay.

We've only done a few of the essentials so far: dress picked out, venue set, invitations close to mailing stage, and deposit placed on cupcakes.

So still lots to do: finding flowers, a DJ, a caterer, hotel for out-of-town guests and our wedding night, location for short honeymoon within driving distance (Poconos?), videographer, setting the program for wedding and reception, rehearsal dinner plans, etc.

We are overwhelmed by the available advice, tools, and options as we talk to friends and scour wedding websites. So, like everything else in my life, I hope to get all the advice I need from DVDTalk. And unlike the proposal thread, I won't ignore you all and do want I planned anyway, because I literally have almost nothing planned.

I've already received some great tips and thoughts from MinLShaw, but the more ideas the better.

What I would really like are tips on how to make the reception interesting and fun for everyone, with some lasting memories in print or photo for us. I've heard of things like disposable cameras at every table and pieces of paper for every guest to answer questions like, "Where do you see Jen and Trevor in 5 years?".

There will be no alcohol unfortunately, church rules, and finances and nostalgia have us locked in there. Also, many of the guests are older and the reception hall at church isn't great for dancing, so not sure how much of that we'll have. So without alcohol and dancing, my options for keeping it fun are limited. Any ideas are open for consideration, even dumpster diving and butt peeing.

A wedding without alcohol? Sounds horrible.

Also, do yourself a favor and get a pre-nup.

No alcohol or dancing? That is unfortunate.

Sorry, no ideas on how to make a wedding more fun without dancing and alcohol.

My cousin had her wedding reception at a community center and I think it had a no alcohol policy; however, I was informed there were (3) "car bars" available in the parking lot if I wished to have a drink.

Don't worry about the older guests and dancing -- they will get up and dance. If there is no alcohol then at least have some dancing.

No alcohol and no dancing? Ouch. Aren't those 2 things the main reasons people show up to weddings?

We found that disposable cameras on the tables was a great idea. Some tables didn't do much with them, but we got some great/hilarious photos out of some of them too. YMMV.

Guys, this is Trevor. He does the opposite of what we suggest (his promise to the contrary be damned ).

So no alcohol sounds like a great idea and don't bother with a prenup. Oh and, above al else, do not have a bachelor party with super hot strippers.

Consummate the marriage right there on the altar after the ceremony. That will make it interesting and fun for everyone and guarantee lasting memories for all.

My second biggest regret was not having alcohol and dancing, so....

First regret was not having a Star Trek wedding. No I'm not even joking. If there's something that you both love and want to make a part of your lives this way, do not hesitate to make it work somehow.

Re: Wedding/reception planning ideas please

It is absolutely possible to have a lovely and charming wedding and reception without alcohol and dancing. You will also save a pile of money, which is always good.

I once went to a wedding reception where each guest was handed a page from a loose-leaf album and asked to write down their favorite memory of the couple (or member of the couple that they knew) so that the bride and groom would have a book of memories to start their lives together with.

Just because there will be no dancing doesn't mean you cannot have beautiful music played. Choose instrumental or classical pieces and keep the volume at a level that people can still converse over it.

Best wishes to your bride and congratulations to you.

Especially if you have it videotaped!

The no-alcohol rule could be easily avoided by exchanging the poland springs bottled water with vodka!

Re: Wedding/reception planning ideas please

We had a photobooth setup which was a HUGE hit - can be expensive though. We also had a couple sets of these glasses which allowed people to make asses of themselves without fear:

Also a big hit.

Either that, or it was the 4 kegs of beer we had.

A friend's wedding last year had a photo booth too. Next to it was a table with various hats and some clothing items for posing in the pictures -- it was a big hit for young and old.

Oh, and the open bar was really, really nice too...

Re: Wedding/reception planning ideas please

Check if "no alcohol" means no hard alochol or no beer and wine. Because my church said no alcohol, but then let us bring as much beer and wine as we wanted.

And I just snuck in my own whiskey for the groomsmen.

Who says it works? It's a fucking novelty item that people had a lot of fun with.

But... crap! I just got back from the bank. So many cameras... so much blood!

Why didn't you warn me of this before!

I'd rather have a pineapple inserted violently into my rectum than go to a dry wedding reception.

Re: Wedding/reception planning ideas please

No alcohol? So no chance of inadvertant nudity or a brew-ha-ha at the reception.

You know how everyone clinks glasses to get the bride and groom to kiss? At my first wedding, we made people sing a theme song from a classic TV show. Of course, that was my FIRST wedding, so it's not like things turned out well.

Have Crow T. Robot give the toast (I see him in your avatar)...that would be great!

I think you should go to Vegas. Everyone says pre-nup but that's only because they're assuming you have money. Go to Vegas and take lots of pics.
