Today in History, Marilyn Monroe. 1954

In front of thousands of spectating New Yorkers at 51st and Lexington, Marilyn Monroe performs the now-famous skirt blowing scene during filming for The Seven Year Itch. The event basically boils down to a publicity stunt, as the whole thing gets reshot later on a Hollywood soundstage.
On the street.

In the studio.

Looking at these pics, she really was on prescription drugs most of the time.

Heels don't seem like the greatest idea on sewer grates.

Am I the only person who doesn't get why she's held up as the epitome of beauty? Or thinks that she was a terrible actress who ruined every movie she appeared in?

It seems less hot that it's a sewer great. It's like the collective farts of a million New Yorkers are what caused her dress to go up. That's more like something you would see on a weird fetish site.

She was a beautiful actress that few actresses nowadays can hold a candle to and was not terrible at acting either.

I'm sure you're not the only one, but I myself don't agree She was beautiful and sexy ('50s standards being different from ours, of course), and I liked her in the handful of movies I've seen her in.

That's not a sewer grate. It's a subway exhaust grate. The subway goes by underneath, the air rushes out of the grate.

I think this is where people miss the true power of MM...She was more than simply physically attractive. I believe she actually gave off one of the most powerful SEXUAL/SENSUAL VIBES/ENERGIES in Hollywood history. Other women in Hollywood give off this energy, but we've yet to see one who did it the way she did. It's the energy that makes men do crazy shit when it comes to dealing with women who have this energy in strong doses. I can tell she was a powerful seductress.

Because she was an incredibly hot babe who also had the good sense and fortune to never grow old.
