Comfortable Shoes: What do you recommend?

So, lately, I've noticed my feet hurting more and more. I find it hard to stand/walk for more than an hour. I'm (slowly) losing weight, so I don't think it's completely a weight issue. I typically wear VANS or skater shoes like these:

So I know that's a big part of the problem.

My wife suggested I get some Birkenstocks (sandals), but I couldn't find any that I liked... in addition to the fact that the season for sandals is over.

I'm going to NYC in 3 weeks and we're anticipating that we're going to do quite a significant amount of walking while we're there.

Does anyone here recommend any specific brands of shoes that you find incredibly comfortable for this purpose? Cost is not an issue (within reason. No $2,000,000 diamond-studded sneakers for me).
Should I be looking for "running shoes" or "hiking shoes" specifically, even though I will absolutely not be running or hiking?

I recommend Johnston & Murphy shoes. Most comfortable shoes I've ever owned. My feet hurt after standing for a while even in sneakers, but not in these babies:

Re: Comfortable Shoes: What do you recommend?

Sketchers with gel insoles. My feet are made for Sketchers. Been wearing them since high school. Most are available in "wide" sizes, if you want the extra room. Problem is that they don't make any slick, hip shoes. So when I want to be wearing something pretty, I have a pair of Nike skater shoes (kind of like your 2nd Vans pictured above).

If you want to be a total dork about it, look up "custom shoes [postal code]". There's shops out there that will make a mold of your foot and create custom insoles. You can get in and out for around $200. I've been thinking about getting a pair made to see how it works out.

Socks are also a big part of the comfort. I wear nice cushioned socks. They help sop up the moisture. I prefer low-cut, as I assume they help a little with circulation.

Re: Comfortable Shoes: What do you recommend?

I like the Apis Mt. Emey shoes. They come in EEEEEE wide, so my feet fit inside them. I still have to wear extra arch supports inside.

Eventually, I did have to go with the custom arch supports for work. But they're expensive, so I went through the off-the-shelf arch supports first. They aren't bad, they just aren't as nice as the custom fit ones. I still use them in my yardwork boots.

Re: Comfortable Shoes: What do you recommend?

I second Skechers, but not necessarily with gel insoles. I've been buying Skechers Energy Afterburn (black leather) for several years now, they're probably the most comfortable shoes I've ever owned. Find a store that handles them, get fitted for size, then buy them at Shoebuy.com on sale (free shipping, free return shipping).

My wife has been doing some research on comfortable shoes and says this brand gets high marks:

Whatever happened to nice cotton socks that didn't leave an impression in your calf at the end of the day? Seems like every sock they make these days is made of polyester has that elastic band at the top that cuts off your circulation.

Re: Comfortable Shoes: What do you recommend?

Thanks all. I know of a local place that carries Merrell's, so I'll be going there tonight. If they have any of the other brands, I'll try them out too.

Good tip about the socks, troystiffler. I think the ones I wear are a little tight on the ankle, but they're not super long. The really short ones I've tried have felt uncomfortable since I'd be able to feel the shoe, instead of the sock, on my skin.

Re: Comfortable Shoes: What do you recommend?

I'd give running shoes a try since you like casual shoes. I do a ton of walking and find them much better than skater shoes for that, although I prefer the latter type when riding my bike. I've had great luck with New Balance, and I also have some Nikes that I like. I've also tried actual walking shoes but I find running shoes more comfortable at the end of the day.

Oh yeah, seconding the recommendation to wear good socks.

As a big guy who does a lot of walking this hasn't been my experience. Right now I'm wearing Nike Dart 8's and they are probably among the best shoes I've owned. In the closet I have a pair each of Asics, New Balance and Avias that I've gone through in the last 9-12 months. They may have been comfortable for a few weeks, but wore out quickly. I managed to keep them going with new insoles, but they were never as good as these Nikes.

That's my favorite as well. If you keep your eyes open you can buy them for substantially less.

Used to wear Mephisto but the quality isn't so good anymore. Ecco and geoxx are pretty good values now. Last a long time.

I've been wearing nothing but Merrell for over a year now. They are the most comfortable shoes I've ever worn.

I'm surprised more people don't know about Merrell. Is it not a popular brand in the US? I've been wearing them for decades now.

When I do lots of walking around NYC I put on my new balance sneakers.

You can get them for $121 (the 993) with free UPS shipping

PM me so I can give you the store and coupon code.

Re: Comfortable Shoes: What do you recommend?

I picked up a pair of Merrell's tonight. $105 CAD + GST. I'm going to wear them indoors for a few days to get a feel for them. The store has a 14-day return policy. I'm glad I went to a local store. My Vans and Duffs are size 10, but the size 10 Merrell's felt way too tight. They didn't have a 10.5, but 11 seems to be perfect.

Sonic, since I'm in Canada, I doubt the free UPS shipping still applies. I've tried many sites that offer "free shipping" but as soon as they know I'm in Canada, the price gets jacked up.
