How about you stop bitching and just stay in the backroom? Problem solved. I'm in Texas. And I'm Mexican (American...so Texican? I dunno..but I'm legal!)...so maybe I'm immune to the ability to bitch about heat.

Our central unit died last year and it took a week to get a replacement installed. We set up an elaborate system of fans throughout the house. It didn't really lower the temperature much, but it gave the illusion of coolth.

I live in Florida where it is regularly in the 90s and during the summer reaches 100 with no problem. I have no sympathy for you.

Also, it seems the obvious answer is...just stay in the room with the air conditioner.

The only problem is my computer, tv and game consoles are not in the ac room. And it's not moveable to another room.

I live in Maine, where I have to put up with people pointing and laughing at our weather in winter. It was 72 today and may hit 80 tomorrow.

Suck it and sweat, flatlandah.

But I'll bet some of that stuff is moveable to the AC room.

Currently 89 outside / 91 inside here....no sympathy from me.

Denton probably does have high humidity... so you're heat is probably as bad as the mid-west, east..
But damn, I grew up in an area that gets hot as hell-I remember a few highs over 110 in July and August, but it is always dry. I hate this humid heat. 110 dry heat is better than 95 humid as hell heat!

Re: How to keep cool in a hot house?

^ agreed! Humidity sucks in hot AND cold weather.

As for the OP... if it's that bad, get better AC. If you can afford to take a tranny to Applebee's, you can afford AC in more than one room.

Cleveland gets far colder than anywhere else I've lived, so I don't know how much the humidity effects it.. but I DO love snow!

I take a cool shower - as cold as I can comfortably tolerate - and put special focus on getting the cool water on my head and the back of my neck.

Re: How to keep cool in a hot house?

I went through the summer of 1980 in a house without air conditioning. Go cry someplace else.

Actually, though, to be serious:

If your house has two stories, put window fans in on both levels. The downstairs fans should be pointing inward to pull air into the house. Upstairs put fans pointing outward, to pull warm air OUT of the house.

My central air took a shit a few years back and I'm surviving with a window unit on each floor of my townhouse. It's not the best solution but for now it works.

Re: How to keep cool in a hot house?

Take a bowl of ice cubes and sit them in front of a fan. The cold air from the ice will cool you down. Or leave the house and go to a cool restaurant/tranny bar.

Take you ice & fan shilling somewhere else!

For the OP, have you considered going somewhere like the library during the hottest part of the day? I got lucky when I moved into my new place, the kids of the guy who died left his AC, but when I didn't have any back in the day, I'd go to the library and use the net and read. Or try a local bar, the place I played poker @ tonight was actually too cold when I got there. 2 tap beers an hour to stay cool and watch TV isn't a bad deal.

We've got air conditioning and it's very cool here all year long.

(Extra cool in winter. We have snow in the living room for Christmas. No Lie!)

May I suggest:

Get Naked + Purchase spray bottle and fill it with ice water + Roll back and forth on floor & while squirting self.

(Not necessarily in that order...unless of course you're into that sort of thing.)

Shopping naked actually worked for me during the hungry years!

Re: How to keep cool in a hot house?

I grew up in a house in Southern Illinois that didn't have air conditioning.

As for how I keep cool in my current place - I turn on the AC though I keep it at 78F.
