As for how I keep cool in my current place - I turn on the AC though I keep it at 78F.
Looks like someone else is due for a username change.

Re: How to keep cool in a hot house?

1) go buy a badass window unit ac
2) go buy a badass fan
3) make a ghetto AC unit out of a sheet (w/ slits in it) dipped in water (put plastic planter trough at the top full of water and soak the top of the sheet in it) supposedly works when wind blows through it but fuck if I know, I live in florida and have central AC.

Go to the mall or the pool.

Seriously, why are you home?

I lived in Florida without using the air conditioner. Drink plenty of water and do not move much.

Plastic spray mist bottle full of ice cold water to mist yourself while sitting in front of a fan. I'm a Yankee who has never gotten used to the heat of the south and it actually works. Had a problem with our A/C one year and it kept me cool.

Since heat rises, make sure you're laying on the floor at all times. If you have to go to another room, an army crawl would be your best option.

Until 50 years ago, almost no one in this country had AC. People would sit on their front porch and talk to their neighbors. If it was good enough for the Greatest Generation, it should be good enough for you.

Can you get a(nother) window unit? We just got our AC serviced for the first time (AC was installed when we moved in 6 years ago) and found out that the Capaictor had kinda blown up last year. Not knowing this at the time, we had purchased a window unit and just used cheap box fans to move the cool air throughout the house. It worked well enough.

It was like 95 here yesterday and I didn't even turn on my AC until I went to sleep.

Install central air. Do swamp coolers work in Chicago or is it too humid?

Even if it's really hot in the house our basement is usually round 65-68.. So I head downstairs.

Re: How to keep cool in a hot house?

When I had a big apartment with no central air, I just hung a sheet over the doorway to keep the window ac in the one room

Ive also put sheets in the freezer..AHHHHH..lay on those cold fuckers when its hot! PURE BLISS.

I have central air but a crawlspace thats not properly insulated, so when its fucking 90+ I have the air set for 69 but cant get the house below 73. Its still comfortable but I also run 4 foot high oscillating fan with an ionizer.

Keep shades down and all windows shut.
Have the fans going and take a shower and sit in front of the fan and drink ice water.

DO SWAMP COOLERS WORK ANYWHERE?

It's a big money pit (constant maintenance, big water bill) if you ask me. And I also spaz every time they start leaking into my shop.

I fucking hate swamp coolers. HATE. Like Hitler hated the Jews. Swamp coolers are worse than Hitler!

Work great in Colorado. My water bill goes up about $10, and my energy bill is next to nothing. The only maintenance I've had to do is replace the pads yearly, about $7, and oil the squirrel cage. Everyone I know that uses a swamp cooler has similar results, maybe you just have a shitty one.

The only thing I don't like about the swamp cooler, is you have to keep doors and windows open for air flow. It's fine at night, but not if you're trying to sleep in later than 7 AM.
