Ignored by cops, man starts blog to track his stolen laptop, with pictures of thief.

After this guy's laptop was stolen, he showed the cops his tracking software and the thief's location. But the cops "didn't have enough resources" to do anything about it, so the guy started a blog about it, including pictures of the thief. After more than two months of knowing where the thief was, the cops finally decided to arrest him:

This Guy Has My MacBook

On March 21, 2011, my MacBook was stolen from my apartment in Oakland, CA. I reported the crime to the police and even told them where it was, but they couldn't help me due to lack of resources. Meanwhile, I'm using the awesome app, Hidden, to capture these photos of this guy who has my MacBook.

Update: (June 1, 11:32 AM PST) The Oakland Police acquired my MacBook last night, and I picked it up this morning!

Update: (May 31, 8:37 PM PST) ARRESTED! An Oakland police officer just called me to let me know that they arrested the guy in my photos! BOOYA! The police used my evidence (email which pointed to a cab service) that he was a driver and tricked him into picking them up. Nice work OPD!

Update: (May 31, 7:38 PM PST) Thanks to the power of the Internet, I have the attention of the Oakland Police, who are tracking this guy down RIGHT NOW! Follow @jmk on Twitter for updates!

Retiring this blog. Follow my other blog, unraveled also.

Iím retiring this blog, but if you would like to keep up with me on Tumblr, you can follow my main tumblelog, unraveled also. I can also be found elsewhere on the web, including my main website, unraveled.

Thanks to everyone for following ďThis Guy Has My MacBookĒ and supporting the effort to get my MacBook back!

My MacBook Timeline

Rather than repeat this over and over, I thought it would be helpful if I published a short timeline of events, from the day my MacBook was stolen, until today when I picked it up.

My MacBook was stolen on March 21, 2011 from my apartment in Oakland, CA. It happened during the day while I wasnít home.

I reported the crime on the same day to an officer from the Oakland Police Department. For verification, the original police report was 11-014180.

I immediately began to gather photos, network and location information about my stolen MacBook using Hidden.

I followed up with an investigator at Oakland Police Department on April 25, presenting him with this additional evidence, which was attached to my previous report

I contacted the investigator twice via email, asking him if he was able to make any progress on my case, but I didnít hear anything back.

On Friday, May 27, I decided to set up a tumblelog with photos of the current owner (who may or may not be the thief) in order to get some media attention.

The tumblelog didnít receive much attention until I tweeted about it on the morning of Tuesday, May 31. Within a few hours, it was tweeted and liked thousands of times.

Late Tuesday afternoon, I received a call from Officer Joshi of the Oakland Police Department after she was contacted by Good Morning America. She told me that the Oakland Police Department would be following up on my case immediately.

On the evening of Tuesday May 31, two officers from the Oakland Police Department arrested the guy who had my laptop. The police used evidence I had gathered using Hidden (an email address which pointed to a cab service) that he was a driver and tricked him into picking them up.

Later that evening the officers acquired my MacBook from his home.

I picked it up from the Oakland Police Department on the morning of June

Guy sleeping on the couch next to my MacBook.

I really donít want to know what this guy is doing with my MacBook.

Guy signing into his Google account on my MacBook.

Guy deleting my account on my MacBook.

Guy staring deliriously into my MacBook.

Guy driving away with my MacBook.

I really like this story.

The guy looks normal. Just goes to show how fucked up everyday people can be.

The crook looks French. He could also be someone Liam Neeson would punch in the throat for kidnapping his daughter.

Not Liam Neeson: I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking to ransom my Macbook, I can tell you I don't have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills and an app; an app I have acquired for under 2 dollars (but is not angry birds). An App that will make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my Macbook go now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, I will post pics of you looking silly in a messy apartment, and I will make a blog about it.

French looking Macbook thief who also drives a cab: [after a long pause] Good luck.

He does look normal.

But most people are better behaved than he is - so I wouldn't call him an "everyday" person.

Re: Ignored by cops, man starts blog to track his stolen laptop, with pictures of thi

Had a case like this a few years ago.

Took about a week but got the guy.

The person I was in contact with wasn't the owner but a rep of the software company. She kept sending me screenshots and the IP addresses where the suspect was logging in from.

Didn't take too long on identifying him....he put his picture as his background. But..he'd moved and turns out that he was stealing someones internet service so it took a few extra days to get him.

Knocked on his door with a warrant and confronted him. He initially denied it until I showed him a screenshot of the background on the laptop and a snapshot of him logging into some porn site and Yahoo.

Got a nice felony conviction out of it.

Great programs...

Apparently since people misunderstood Taken and thought that because the daughter was kidnapped in France all of the film's villains were French, which is not the case.

What makes you think cops ever had the resources, or the know-how, or the manpower, or even the desire to help normal citizens? when they're not beating the shit out of minorities, arresting the wrong person and then executing them, they're doing important things like giving out traffic tickets.

Trust me, if there was a blog about the ineffectualness of the police, it would be filled with far more stories about people's unjust treatment by the cops, a few stories were cops were being a total asshole and completely useless, and maybe, just maybe, there was one story about how a cop didn't do his job right and an innocent man got away. It's amazing that when cops solve a crime it's such an amazing feat that it makes national headlines.

That was idiotic.

"Ineffectualness," though, was a nice touch. Inefficacy is more elegant, but doesn't completely convey idiocy.

Okay...

I tend to think that the vast majority of police take their jobs seriously and do them well, with a respect for the law and the citizenry. Yes, there are police officers out there who abuse their power, but I think they're in the minority. And really, it's that way in every profession; there are corrupt politicians, bankers, realtors, teachers, business owners, journalists, etc.

You know why you hear more about police abusing their power? Because that's a better headline than an officer doing their job without any complaints.

It's true. I can't remember the last time I saw a headline about a child going to school, sitting still, getting a B+ on a test, letting little Suzy have a seat at the lunch table, and then riding home on the bus without getting into a fight.

I've not been too impressed with police for property crimes. I think most of them believe that insurance will make the party whole so they just don't prioritize it.

That's what I was thinking.

Guy is a couple of huge ears shy of a Ferengi, and his ears are definitely trying.

If I was anywhere where a victim of a crime was shouting 'who did this!?', I'd say 'that shady Ferengi-looking guy over there most likely'.
