Anyone use prepaid cell phones?

I used to have a Virgin Mobile, then my mom talked me into going in on a Verizon contract. They kept charging us extra and so we're bailing on them. Right now I'm leaning towards Boost Mobile cause they have phones that I like, Any word on how their coverage is? I got decent coverage out of VM, but BM is cheaper and I like the phones better.

Yup, Verizon screws everyone... no virgin mobiles left over there.

Yes, I used to have virgin mobile until T-mobile came along and they were much cheaper. Now, Pageplus looks to be the best for prepaid 2000 min/year for $80 or less. You'll need a Pageplus phone or a Verizon phone (can't be prepaid phone though).

I still have my LG I got for free in 2006, and I signed up with AT&T's "Go Phone". I pay $25 for 3 months - and I hardly use the phone at all.

I have a prepaid phone from Verizon and it sucks. I want to get a real phone, but don't feel like taking on an extra monthly bill, seeing as I don't use it all that often.

I just switched from TracFone to Platinumtel because of the free Samsung M800 phone. Either way, it's $100 per year. I don't use all the minutes.

Re: Anyone use prepaid cell phones?

I have Virgin Mobile and I love it! $25/mo for unlimited data and texting. I only get 300 minutes, but I never come close to using them all as I use Google Voice for 85% of my calls. The only downside is having to buy your phone upfront, but I like my LG Optimus V and it was only $130. Way more cost effective than my iPhone with AT&T.

Re: Anyone use prepaid cell phones?

I really want an Optimus V, but dammit, now I can't find one cheaper than $199. I know it's going to be cheap sometime soon, probably the week after I break down and buy one full price. lol Rumor is VM will be releasing a Motorola smartphone later this year. The only time I lost coverage with VM was when I drove up in the mountains.

How do you like the M800 phone? Reviews are mixed.

I have Virgin mobile, and I love it.

i never use it to talk,i thinkt he first 2 months, I didn't even use my "bonus minutes" I got for when my friend signed up and I used a promo code when I signed up.

Ultd data and texting for $25 a month is amazing.

My wife has an android phone through T-Mobile for her prepaid. The phone's relatively new but she's had the plan for a few years and spends less than $100 per year.

T-Mobile, get a 1000 minutes that last a year, can usually get the cards for $90-95 on ebay. I'll have to look into this "Pageplus" that big whoppa mentioned.

If you talk a lot check the small print. A lot of them don't give you free minutes for talking on the same network or on weekends/nights.

Got the LG Optimus One for $50 with Koodo ($150 - $100 Visa gc), then cancelled Koodo, signed up with PC Mobile prepaid with $7/month unlimited browsing. Not sure how long the later will last since you can do a hell of a lot more than browsing (e-mail, VOIP, etc...) with the proper settings/tweaks.

Re: Anyone use prepaid cell phones?

I have had one since 2004 and it suits me perfectly. It was originally AllTel, but changed hands a few times and is now Verizon. No contract, flat .15/minute in network .50/minute roaming with nothing free. I have to add minutes every 2 months or they expire, but I average about $10/month. I rarely use it though. I have a home phone and a phone at the office. The last call I placed was on 4/15 for 1 minute 44 seconds. It wouldn't be practical if you were a big phone talker. My original phone that I bought at wal-mart crapped out on me last year, so I bought a new one for $17.

It was a little bit of a hassle keeping track of how many minutes you have and when they expire, but since Verizon took over, they are much better about notifying you. It's all done online, so it's simple. They also have an option to give them your credit card number and they will automatically replenish minutes when you run out. It has only run out on me once and when the minutes are gone, you have nothing. Your call is dropped and you can't place another one.

Re: Anyone use prepaid cell phones?

I've never really understood why the cell phone market is dominated by 2 year contracts. I've got the Samsung Intercept via Virgin Mobile. A full-out Android smart phone for $25 per month with no contract & unlimited text/data is a steal. I've never even come close the the allowable 300 minutes per month, but use the hell out of everything else.

2 years is probably the average time it takes them to recoup the cost of the phone from the fees and other charges.

The downside of the good deal is you pay a lot for the phone up front. But in the long run it's a good deal. I've been trying to decide if I want to get one of the Android phones.

Re: Anyone use prepaid cell phones?

Thanks for the info y'all. I'm going to take another look at the VM phones available. $25 for 300 minutes and unlimited text and data would be perfect for me.
