Is There Any Place To Live Safe From Mother Nature's Wrath?

Seriously, i am ready to get the heck out of Arkansas. I've been through a lot of tornado watches in Texas, but never experienced so many close calls as I have this month.

Last week, tornado sirens went off 5 times. Last night I had one foot in the bathroom while the other part was still watching the tv tracking a funnel cloud literally two miles from my place. Then I find out these same storms wiped out Vilonia and 50 ppl are missing. That is so bad that unless you have a storm shelter, you probably won't survive.

And if that wasn't enough fun, round two tonite. NOAA upgraded my area for high risk for deadly violent tornados. It was only moderate risk yesterday.

So is there truly a part of the US that has nice weather and no weather worries? Forget the coast. I don't want earthquakes and hurricanes. CA has wildfires and mudslides as well and the northern states deal with winter weather nightmares.

Re: Is There Any Place To Live Safe From Mother Nature's Wrath?

The only real thing here in AZ is the occasional flooding from summer monsoons. Sure it's hot as hell for 4 months of the year, but it's nice the other 8 months of the year.

Pacific Northwest - The worst we have here is rainy weather with the occasional earthquake (we are due for a very large one though)

... upstate AZ is a bit better... 20 degrees cooler than the Phoenix area and Summer monsoons don't flood. Having lived all but the last 10 years of my life in NY, this area is perfect. We have 4 seasons but not the extremes. In the winter we get about 4-5 snowfalls. A few inches to make it look pretty... but completely melts within a few hours so no shoveling required.

I live near Philadelphia, and it seems that the mid-Atlantic is a very safe area. We get the occasional tail end of a hurricane, but otherwise the weather is comparatively mild.

Okay, so far:

South: Tornadoes
Coasts: Earthquakes, hurricanes, mudslides
Southwest: Heat, flooding

I've actually been looking at Washington State. The weather temps sound wonderful. No brutal winters, and 70s in the summer. By contrast, Arkansas is just about unbearable. Spring and fall temperatures only seem to last a few weeks and we get like 8 months of brutal hot sticky weather.

Re: Is There Any Place To Live Safe From Mother Nature's Wrath?

Here in Pennsylvania we get snow every once and awhile, usually the winters are tame but they get bad every once and awhile.

Not very many tornadoes but they have been know to happen in PA, not very many hurricains either but they also happen from time to time.

I feel bad for you and Arkansas as you have been under the gun this year with tornadoes, and you guys had a bad season last year as well.

Today has a potential to be an epic tornado outbreak, please take care; you don't see 30% probability very often.

Looks like Eastern Washington or Easter Oregon are the places to be. We don't get the earthquakes. Seattle and Tacoma are screwed when a big one hits. When Mt. Rainer blows, they are screwed as well. I'm far enough away to be fine. St. Helens was just an annoyance.

And then you have to deal with forest/brush fires. Which are a yearly occurrence.

FWIW, I read an article somewhere (I wish I could remember where I saw it) where the metro Phoenix area is a haven for tech companies because there have been no categorical natural disasters in the area that would affect services ever. Basically guarantees a company up time, all the time.

I know, we're still picking up the pieces from last night, and it's like, are you fucking kidding me, even worse tonight? I'm south of Little Rock so I'm definitely in the red zone. And one prediction is it will hit LR around 5, right at rush hour. That would be a total nightmare.

I really hate my weather forecaster. Upgraded my county to PDS which could mean F4 or F5 tornados. I have no storm shelter so I could be facing potential death tonight. Scary!

I saw a show where some crazy folks figured out that some spot in Idaho was the safest (from natural, and man made disasters). I suppose you'd have to factor in a fear of those people that think you are encroaching on their territory though.

Re: Is There Any Place To Live Safe From Mother Nature's Wrath?

Hawaii has no blizzards or tornadoes. The volcanoes don't explode, but just drool lava. The last big earthquake was over 150 years ago. There are almost no hurricanes. The recent tsunami was a 7 foot wave, which is just an ordinary winter storm back east. The average temperatures range from 76 degrees in January to 81 degrees in July. The biggest worry of the last century was Japanese aircraft.

Interior BC would be my safe zone. Fairly nice climate, no earthquakes, no tornadoes or other extreme weather.
