Re: Is There Any Place To Live Safe From Mother Nature's Wrath?

Despite all the brightly colored maps posted, it's not to shabby here. Occasional tornado warning (1-2 a year, had one last week). The Ohio is flooding right now, but that's downtown and doesn't affect me at all. We get a freak winter storm once every 8-10 years. Nothing really to complain about here.

National Weather Service issues "dangerous situation" tornado watch for parts of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi.

A "particularly dangerous situation watch" is issued when there is a high risk of multiple strong tornadoes.

Yeah, I'm just south of Chattanooga, and areas north and south of me got slammed. We just got a bit of rain. I guess we'll see what the next few hours brings.

Local news is saying 25 dead so far. Tuscaloosa just got creamed; the footage was horrifying.

Were there other EF-5s? The one in the video (Tuscaloosa) was an EF-5, mile-wide, 15 dead there.

Wow over 170 dead now. I've never seen anything like this. And the weather guy is saying more bad weather on Sunday. Can't even catch our breath for a week.

That's interesting.

I seem to remember seeing a television program where they said "Tornado Alley" would be moving east, and those maps seem to indicate that's what is happening.

The traditional tornado hotspots -- Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska -- seem relatively untouched, while the eastern US, particularly the South, is getting shit-hammered.

I do not miss tornadoes. They can keep moving East, away from me.

We get nice, easy stuff, like droughts. It hasn't rained yet this year. When it finally does rain, everyone's going to stand around gawping at it.

It's just the normal weather cycle or this planet or are we going to blame the ice ages on global warming too?

Re: Is There Any Place To Live Safe From Mother Nature's Wrath?

I feel sorry for everyone affected by these terrible storms.

That being said, I'm probably going to hell for laughing at the following statements in CNN's article on the devastation:

http://www.cnn.com/2011/US/04/28/sev...pt=T1&iref=BN1

Quote:
Bentley estimated as many as half a million to a million people had no electricity in Alabama
How does number differ from the figure prior to the storms?

Quote:
Henry Nguyen told CNN early Thursday he was working at his father's convenience store on the edge of Pratt City when he saw a twister angling for the front door. He ducked. When he stood up, Nguyen said he saw that the tornado had missed the storefront by 50 yards.
Like that will help when the twister hurls a pickup truck through the front door of the convenience store ...

Quote:
The storm also unleashed as many as 80,000 chickens in Pickens County, Georgia, after four huge coops were destroyed.
The results of that could be far worse than the damage caused by the tornadoes.

Storm Chasers is going to have one hell of a season this year. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the footage we're seeing on the news is from some of those guys.

Yeah, now at least 248 dead, I couldn't believe it, last time I checked toll was at 64. From Yahoo news:
Quote:
Alabama's state emergency management agency said it had confirmed 162 deaths, while there were 32 in Mississippi, 32 in Tennessee, 13 in Georgia, eight in Virginia and one in Kentucky.

It's bound to go a lot higher. 80K people were in the path of that storm, and most probably don't own storm shelters. I hear you have to be underground to survive F5. I imagine a lot of the dead are children and elderly people.

Re: Is There Any Place To Live Safe From Mother Nature's Wrath?

luckily here it just rained heavily and thundered for about 15 minutes and there were a few mild wind gusts. Sucks for those impacted by these tornadoes!
