The Corner Store - A Way To Deal With The Enemy

The Corner Store - A Way To Deal With The Enemy

Lived in this area for a few years. There is a corner store next to my son's school. We go in there relatively often. The owner is usually the one at the counter, sometimes his wife and family take their turn. My dealings with him have always been good. Rent movies there on the occasion as it is close. Candy section with lots of selection. A couple of months ago he started acting different. As are most of the store owners in the area, the family is Korean. So they are unfailingly polite. The only Korean owners I have met that are less than fully polite are in the more questionable areas of town.

The first few times it happened I just ignored it. He was more distant. Slower to get to the counter. Took longer to handle me at the counter. There are a few other stores to go to. Started thinking about skipping his store, but my son likes it and it would put me out more than him. Last week I wanted to rent a few movies. Dropped my son at school and went in. He was on the phone. Brought the movies to the counter. And ended up wandering around the store for 10 minutes. Got my movies. Left. To keep it simple, I was grieved. Just seemed unearned and severely impolite.

Today dropped my son off. Went in to get some more movies. And yes, I wanted to see if that stunt was going to happen again. And here's how it went. I walked in and went to the back. Noticed he was on the phone. Grabbed a couple of films. One of them was "Clash of the Titans." It can't be real good, but it has to be better than "Legion." Right? 'Cause that was an utterly abominable wreck. Brought the movies to the counter, laid them down.
He likes to stand behind the counter. Looking straight ahead. I wait a few moments. Walk over to the magazine rack. Glance back a few times in his direction. He just looks straight ahead.

Well, fuck me Santa, here we go again. I walk by the counter and place some chips and dip on the counter. He keeps staring ahead. I go to the magazine rack. Kill a minute looking at it. Look at him. Same deal. Walk by the counter and drop off the stores rental card. I pause. Nothing still from the guy. Walk back down the aisle, pick up a couple more items. Drop them at the counter. Lather, rinse, repeat. He continues to stay on the phone. I always pause at the counter. Hang out at the magazine racks for a while. Try and make eye contact. He just keeps holding the phone. Won't get off it. I don't say anything, because it is unnecessary. Get off the phone you impolite dick.

And I walked right out the door. He probably thought I was going to get a coffee at the next store. Nope. I was gone. Liked the part where I dropped off the stores card early on. Kinda like I'm committed to this transaction. Wonder how long it sat on his counter. Kept my face impassive. Walked out like I was just coming back. Hope he enjoyed putting all that stuff back. Counted all the money he lost. And will lose. And I will definitely go back soon to see what he says. If anything. It felt good to get someone back and mess with them a bit, but avoid some scene.

Anyone got a story to tell about dealing with customer service issues?

Sounds like the guy has become depressed. Have you seen his wife lately? He may be going through a divorce.

WTF were you doing? Get your stuff and then stand by the counter and stare at him, if he waits on you fine if not leave. Why make 5 trips to the counter? He probably didn't even know you wanted to check out ambling around like that.

Maybe someone in his family is sick or maybe he figured out that the more he ignores you the more you walk around the store and the more you buy.

Maybe he's only running the store as a way to put himself through film school, and now that he's seen what people actually want to watch, he realized that his lifelong dream has been a lie.

Maybe someone made up of rumors about you and told him and now he tries to avoid you. I was really hoping you were going to get to bottom of it.

I'd just stand there until he got off the phone. Then politely ask if something is wrong.

Why is he the enemy? It's not like he sodomized your wife or sold your son crack. Sounds like he's having problems with his life, can't concentrate on work and can't take time off.

Oh gawd I hate it when people act like you're acting!

If you are concerned about his change in attitude toward you ASK HIM WHAT'S WRONG!

I wish I could stomp on everyone who just sort of lurks around hoping you'll notice that they're unhappy about something, and figure out what they want. How the heck can anyone have relationships if they act that way? Preacher, ask the person nearest to you to slap you for me, will you?

Get the hell out of there and nuke the place from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

Re: The Corner Store - A Way To Deal With The Enemy

The store owner does not speak very much to any of the customers. His wife is very talkative and outgoing. Often when someones first language is not English they use it to put a barrier up between themselves and the customers. I would imagine sometimes it is because they do not speak it very well, but many of the local store owners (almost all of them Korean) who I have encountered have been outgoing and willing to try. Since his wife is pretty good, I would imagine he is also. And I have seen him a few times show much more language skill than you would suspect.

But when in this situation, simply waiting to talk to him would doubtless have failed. He would have fallen back on not understanding what the issue was and it would have ended right there. What I am going to do is go back in this week with my son when I get him after school. He'll be with me to deflect and deflate anything that might possibly occur. He'll get some candy and the opportunity will be there for the store owner to ask or say something.

And damnit, is Clash of the Titans worse than Legion?

Oh, so you expect him to speak first? When your problem with him is that he's not talking to you?

Ask them both out. Koreans are just as interested in swinging as everyone else.
