Remember when the oldest people in the world supposedly all lived in one village in the USSR?

Today the USA has the gold, silver, AND bronze!

It was real Soviet propaganda. Dannon just used an existing story as an advertising hook. It was pretty funny how the story got debunked. The same researchers went back for a follow-up 12 years later, and the old people were 18-22 years older.

I always find the spans of these people's lives fascinating. Someone that lived through the Civil War could have been around for the massive social changes of the 1960s and 1970s.

Man. When you put it like that, that's kind of weird to think about.

Brooklyn's Susannah Mushatt Jones, oldest person and last American born in the 1800s, dies at age 116

May 13, 2016

Susannah Mushatt Jones, the world's oldest person, has died at the age of 116 years, 311 days.

The supercentenarian died at 8:26 p.m. Thursday evening at her senior home in Brooklyn, the Gerontology Research Group’s Robert Young told the Daily News.

She was the last known American to have been born in the 1800s, and there is currently only one more person in the world verified as having taken breath in the 19th century.

GRG, which works with the Guinness Book of World Records, said that the oldest person is now Emma Morano-Martinuzzi, an Italian born on Nov. 29, 1899.

Jones celebrated her 116th birthday last July with family and friends. Her cake paid tribute to her love of chicken drumsticks and bacon.

The queen of King’s County inherited the title of world’s oldest person from Jerlean Telley, a Michigan woman who died last year at the age of 116.

Jones, known to loved ones as “Miss Susie,” told the Daily News last year that she credited her long life to getting sleep, not smoking and not drinking, though she admits that she loves and often eats bacon.

Her one marriage lasted only briefly, but the woman — born during the McKinley administration — has more than 100 nieces and nephews.

Young said that he had met her in April, but that he had only heard her say she was tired.

Jones was the third American in a row to be able to call the every one else on the planet a whippersnapper.

It seems 116-120 years is the biological limit (Hayflick limit for cells) for humans under modern medicine without genetic manipulations.

There is a lot of stuff out there that billionaires are throwing millions at increasing the Hayflick limit through gene doping.

In the mid-1990s, my great-grandmother was still alive (she was born in 1899). She passed away a few years later, but at the time, it was mind-boggling to me that she was born in 1899.

Wow, only one 1800er left? Seems just like yesterday that my 1898 grandmother didn't seem all that old.

Opal was her name, haven't met anyone else with that name, ever, as far as I remember.

I've met Opals before. It was a much more popular girl's name before World War II.

I was always fascinated by that Civil War widow that lived nearly into the 1970s. Think of the seismic shift in society between those eras.

Yeah, but most of the Civil War Widows like that married Civil War vets as old men in the 1900's and there was a huge age difference between them.

I do remember reading where our 10th president John Tyler still has two living grandchilden.

Did not believe that and looked it up. Holy crap. As of February at least, President John Tyler (born in the 1700s John Tyler) has two living grandsons. Basically, Tyler had a son when he was about 70, and so did that son.
