One or Two Periods After a Sentence?

I've been taught to use two spaces after a period/exclamation point/question mark ever since my first typewriting course. Now, I read that you're only supposed to use one space after ending a sentence. What's the correct number of spaces?

Re: One or Two Periods After a Sentence?

I was always taught two spaces after the end of a sentence. It seemed to become acceptable to use only one space once the HTML-age took hold.

Re: One or Two Periods After a Sentence?

From what I remember, the "two spaces after a period" is from the old typewriter days. Typewriters space all characters and spaces the same, so to make it easier to see when a sentence ended and another began, the practice of two spaces was used. Nowadays, word processing software allows the use of variable spacing for each character, gently smashing the words together and making it easier to see the sentence end with only a single space. As a person who learned to touch type on a Selectric back in the stone age, I still put two space due to muscle memory.

Yep, back in those days my hometown was booming, and funding for school equipment was excellent. Hell, in my senior year we got our first computer classroom with ten Apple II+ computers! I took that first class, Computer Mathematics, and learned BASIC. Making the computer play Rush's Tom Sawyer to show off... Good times.

Re: One or Two Periods After a Sentence?

Shouldn't the title of the thread be one or two spaces after a sentence? And I use two.

Re: One or Two Periods After a Sentence?

I was taught to use two spaces. Of course, I was taught on a manual typewriter and we also learned how to use carbon paper. So things might have changed since then.

Still use two spaces, even though I know it'll be reduced to one when I hit post.

Two spaces after a period, one space after a comma or semicolon. One or two spaces may be used after a colon.

Re: One or Two Periods After a Sentence?

I was taught two spaces and that's what I still do. I was also taught with computers, but I'm guessing it was just carry over with the norm.

Re: One or Two Periods After a Sentence?

I was taught 2 spaces after a period in typing class back in high school, but haven't done it since using a computer.

Plus the computer doesn't make that cool sound when hitting the keys.

Two spaces after a period.

I still make a dash with two hyphens. I don't think anyone does that anymore. But it looks right to me.

This guy's got it right.

So, if you are using a fixed-width font such as Courier, use 2 spaces. Otherwise, retrain your fingers to use one space. Unless you're on a smartphone.

This is a good read btw. I enjoyed it in the 90s when I was a graphic artist: http://www.amazon.com/Pc-Not-Typewri.../dp/0938151495

Two spaces after every period. However, from this post, it appears that's not the case.
