Bang up job.
Guy asks about an overpriced, not to mention over-hyped beer made in Michigan. I recommend one of the best small scale, semi-local breweries who only happens to distribute a state over and within a limited range to Illinois. Seems pretty relevant to me. Nice input though.

How is Blushing Monk overpriced or overhyped? You're referring to $10 six pack/bomber of a completely different beer that isn't even close to ABV or ingredients used (which determines price). I see no relevance of your post personally.

If anything, FFF is overhyped. Yes, I have been there many times and hit DLD twice... overhyped but great for the area it is in.

Over priced? 22oz at 13.99-15.99 most places. Now, if you wanted to recommend small scale, local breweries, you could have gone Half-Acre (Daisy Cutter) or Two Brothers (Cane & Ebel).

Mostly small local breweries - according to the site - but they had me at "cask tent"!

And 'yes', we're staying in a hotel because we're responsible adults...

Tonight I hope to hit my local pub as they're tapping a small keg of Founder's Blushing Monk. Whether I get there before it's gone is another story
You should be hitting the Michigan Beer Fest Friday/Saturday instead

Kzoobrew will be up there Saturday. Unfortunately, I will be spending the day writing my diss, though tonight I am going to be at Hopcat and Vivant, so it isn't that bad.

Are you attending? I'll be there both Friday and Saturday. That's 225 beers each day, or roughly 20 samples per hour to taste them all! (My real goal is to sample 10% of them,)

Any reports from the Michigan fest? Looking forward to hearing about it; one helluva line up there.

Renee, are you heading to the Millvale one on August 13? http://www.millvalepa.com/BrewFest.aspx

**edit**

Just took a trip to Pittsburgh today. Had/tried some different beers today and brought home a few today. Still looking forward to going back and hitting up some breweries.

Can't wait to try the 14% one.

Got a Red Poppy Ale (The Lost Abbey), great reviews EVERYWHERE. I hate it. Too sour. Like drinking red wine vinegar or something. A salty lemonade? Ewww! Well, at least I only bought one bottle.

I only knew that it had great reviews and that it had a cherry after taste. That wasn't enough research. Lesson learned.

Sour beer is a slow palate to develop. Thankfully, there are some excellent, more approachable, widely available examples. Red Poppy, while excellent imo, is not something I would start with.

On the other hand, I got this in a box today: Looking forward to them.

Really dig a lot of the Two Brothers stuff. We have the luxury of having their Tap House and the newly acquired Roundhouse 15-20 minutes from us. Not only is the beer great at these places, but the food kicks some serious ass too.

The Imperial Pilsner exclusive to the Roundhouse is incredibly smooth and drinkable for a 9% by volume beer. That one gets me in trouble quick.

Re: The Official "Great Beer" thread. Part 2; Same great taste but this time more hop

Sour beer is a really really acquired taste... I drink with a lot of educated drinkers, but the general consensus is "ewwww" the first time around. I'd suggest starting with something like New Belgium La Folie... really easy to find, easy to drink sour. If you do acquire a taste for it, there's not much better than a sour or IPA on a 105 degree day for me. . I just think of it as beer lemonade

BTW, Draught House in Austin had a cask of Ranger Creek La Bestia Sour the other day. Mucho nummers, <3 Ranger Creek

Re: The Official "Great Beer" thread. Part 2; Same great taste but this time more hop

Had my first Cigar City beers tonight. As much as I'm not an IPA fan, I liked the Jai Alai the best. (And the other day in Pittsburgh, I loved the Dark Horse Double Crooked Tree IPA as I didn't think it was what I thought an IPA tasted like at all.)

I don't know whether I'm turning the IPA corner and I'm not going to push the issue, but it's not a bad thing to be happening.

The MI beer festival was insane. While waiting to get in, we were literally standing in a line that wound around well over a quarter mile. I was told there were 6500 attendees that day. Overall, the event was really well organized and one of the nicest festivals I've ever been to. However, the extreme heat definitely got to me and I wasn't able to taste as much as I would have liked.

I found a few beers that I'd never heard of, but really enjoyed- such as Old Hat's PB stout and a Russian Imperial Stout from Big Rock ChopHouse that was stellar. And, it was fun to taste a few of the oddities from places like Shorts and Jolly Pumpkin. Strawberry Short's cake and Bloody Beer were very interesting. As was The Livery's Kentucky Kaffinator, which tasted more like a sour Frank's Red Hot sauce that a doppelbock, but was a huge hit with my friends.

Bell's Batch 9000 was drinking really well right now. After tasting it at the festival, I think we've decided to open a bottle or two that we've been cellaring, hoping some of the flavors and alcohol taste would mellow. They have.

Dark Horse's Super Juice was like liquid candy. Went down too well, and after a few of those it would have been easy to record a ridiculous blood alcohol level on the breathalyzers present at the festival. That concept was new to me, but for $2 you could test your BAC. We had a DD, but it was still nice to have some idea of how easily things can get out of control. With 25% of his tokens left, my husband's BAC was .149. Of course, he loved that the women had shirts on that read "Blow before you go." Clever!

The strangest discovery of the day was a 9% Ginger Kombucha beer from Unity Vibration. It was absolutely delicious and went down way too easy. None of us could believe it had 9% ABV when it tasted like the purest ginger ale we'd ever had.

I'm not attending the Millvale festival. I'll be at Blues & Brews in Akron, OH next weekend and also plan to attend Brewzilla in Cleveland in October. In between, I really need to drink some of the beer I've collected and traded for!

My friends and I had a wonderful tour of Thirsty Dog Brewing in Akron yesterday. They're doing a barrel aged version of their Siberian Night Stout and also their Twelve Dogs of Christmas. Both were delicious and I'd highly recommend them if you ever find 'em tapped near you.

Sounds fantastic! Between all the breweries and now that festival, it pains me to say Michigan is doing it right. (That's not fair. I shouldn't hold the U of M against the whole state. haha) I'd really like to hit that up next year. I'm going to try to plan in advance next year rather than last minuting it.

I saw about Blues & Brews. I was (well, still am) considering seeing if I can volunteer at Millvale to get in to a session for free, but still haven't called. My buddy and I are just about confirmed for the first annual OctoBREWfest on Sept. 17. We loved the Big Tap In and since VE is sponsoring OctoBREWfest, it should be good. (The Big Pour in PGH the weekend before looks pretty great too.)

Looking forward to a review of Blues & Brews.

If you visit many of the MI festivals or breweries, you might want to consider joining the Brewer's Guild. If we opt to attend next year's Summer Fest, I will absolutely join. For $40, you get a pretty cool tee, organized meet-ups with brewery tours, and 1 hour early admission to all Brewer's Guild Festivals. Given how busy things were on Saturday of the fest, that extra hour would have been well worth it. I'd also recommend going to the Summer festival both Friday and Saturday. We were glad we could review our program at the end of the first night and make some notes about "must try" beers for the second day.

I felt like I was cheating on OSU by spending so much time and money in Ann Arbor, but what a beautiful city. Sorry, Columbus, I'll be returning to Ann Arbor as much as possible! Breakfast at Zingerman's roadhouse was enough to make me want to return.

I attended the Big Pour 4 last September. We enjoyed ourselves, but I don't think I'd go again. We just weren't all that impressed with the brewery line-up. Our favorite beers of the day were from Fatheads, (their brewery is in Cleveland) Great Lakes, and Founders. So, it wasn't really worth the trip. We did bring home some good growlers from East End Brewing, but nothing that justified the 3 hour drive and hotel rates. And, Construction Junction was packed with people, making the process of tasting difficult and sweaty.

I will let you know how Blues & Brews goes. The list of special beers for Brewer's Circle looks pretty nice already. Great Lakes' Rye of the Tiger, Jackie O's Dark Apparition, Thirsty Dog BA Christmas & stout, DogfishHead Black & Red...

Re: The Official "Great Beer" thread. Part 2; Same great taste but this time more hop

OK, my last three "reviewed" beers.

Consecration, from Russian River. It's suppose to be a sour beer, but I didn't feel it. "Belgian style sour aged in Cabernet barrels...DELICIOUS!". Some other reviews say "wine beer". My wife said "it doesn't smell like beer". I loved this beer. I love Russia River, my favorite type of beers are hef and belgian style, so they always get at least 3 stars from me. It's 10% ABV but you don't feel it.

Hitachino Nest XH. American Stron Ale. Great aroma, great taste, it can be a "summer" beer. I've tried other Hitachinos and all of them are "light" but with a good taste, this may be the better. 7% ABV.

Schneider Weisse Original. Hefeweizen, only 5.4% of ABV, so pretty drinkability. A lot of carbonation, of course, great aroma and excellent taste. Great summer beer.

Re: The Official "Great Beer" thread. Part 2; Same great taste but this time more hop

Went up to Trader Joe's and Whole Foods recently; came away with a pretty decent haul. Got a six of Stockyard Oatmeal Stout, split a 6 of Barktoberfest, and a couple bombers to share: Life and Limb 2 and Dark Dawn Stout. And had a pint at B*spot. (Troegs Hop Back Amber Ale)

Still haven't cracked anything open (rough week so far), but looking forward to it before too long.

Re: The Official "Great Beer" thread. Part 2; Same great taste but this time more hop

Took a trip to the Cape Cod Brewery while I was on vacation this week. Good stuff, really liked the Blonde and the Red.

I did the same about a week ago. I thought the IPA was passable.

My girlfriend and I went on Tuesday when they were doing the 11:00 tour. The place was absolutely packed, easily over a 100 people. I got samples of the blonde and red. They were going to hand out samples of the IPA but I really didn't feel like sticking around. The amount of people that brought their kids and baby strollers was ridiculous. I was happy getting a growler of the red and leaving.

Ah, we went last Thursday, no tour. Was nice as we were the only people there. I brought some Michigan brews with me (Short's Spruce Pilsner and Strawberry Short's Cake) to have them try. My wife and I BSed with the tour guide and one of the brewers while they tried what we brought and we tried theirs. Was a very nice time. Still can't get over how little quantity they actually produce.
