so i drilled a hole in the wrong spot for a cabinet hinge.

i drilled a hole and it needs to be moved like 1/8" over. how do i fill the hole so i can drill that close to it again? im thinking wood putty isnt strong enough...or is it?

How wide is the hole? I'd glue in a tight fitting wooden plug and try again tomorrow.

Yeah, glue in either a plug from a pack of small dowels that you use for shelving or get a long hardwood dowel and cut it to the depth you need. And wood putty in the can isn't strong enough and wood epoxy putty won't work either.

Easy. Set the house on fire, say you saw the neighbor kid do it, collect the insurance money and buy a new cabinet.

This is a two person job. Your wife should be filling the hole while you drill from behind.

Measure twice, drill once.

You can just use a bit of wood glue and a few toothpicks (enough to fill the hole) also. Little glue, jam the hole full of toothpicks, let dry and cut flush.

another option: put glue on toothpicks, and put toothpicks in the hole until it is completely filled. Wait 24 hours. Now, with a chisel, cut off the part of the toothpicks that stick out, and you're ready to re-drill

You need to make a template so you don't make the same mistake twice.

the problem is that all the hinges arent in the exact spot. its hard to explain why...crappy router for mortises, my first time using a router and making a jig, weird inset cabinet doors that needed to be modified to fit the hinges, old cabinets that are slightly crooked. you cant tell by looking at them but some of the hinges are off by 1/6 or 1/8. so i need to mark each hinge separately.

why do you hate them? these only close on their own if the door is left open at about 45 degrees. these are just a bitch to mark were the holes go since i have to push all the way down on the door to flatten the hinge and then make sure it is level... just so i can mark the holes.

Re: so i drilled a hole in the wrong spot for a cabinet hinge.

I installed some cabinets recently and did almost the same thing(not quite a large hole). The cabinets came with some kind of filler that you rub over the hole and it fills it in nicely. Did you get this with yours?

these are old cabinets. i just refinished them and added new hardware. i gave them a much needed update from the 50's. the problem was that they had weird hinges and a thick doors. so i had to trim part of the cabinet door on the table saw to make modern hinges work.
