Work related trip: Would you room with someone else?

Long Version:
So here's the story. Last month, my team from work met with some of our other team members from around the world in Cali for a 5 day conference. To save money, all employees were asked to room with a fellow employee. I haven't had a roomate in my life in about 15 years was not keen on sharing a bedroom and bathroom with another coworker who might be a stranger. At first I was sort of okay with it thinking we would all get suites with separate bathrooms and bedrooms but after I looked online I realized all the rooms were 1 bathroom and 2 king beds. I asked for a single room and said I would pay my own way if I could not get one.. I got a single room and was the only one.

Now we are going to have a conference again in Feb in another city and again they want to room with someone else. I don't want to be too much of a pain in the ass and rock the boat especially with jobs being at a premium (not that I would be fired over it), but I really don't want to share a room. I don't even like sleeping in the same room as my girlfriend and we use separate bathrooms. Also I work for a major company so its not like they are hurting for cash.

Short Version:
Would you room with a co-worker/stranger on a business trip?

What would you do?

I envy you for even being able to get away with this.

Re: Work related trip: Would you room with someone else?

I have done both.

At a previous job, we were expected to share. I remember one time I spent my anniversary int he "honeymoon suite" of this nasty hotel.

It was expect to share when on the road.

At my current job, I have gone to "school's" where I shared a room with a stranger.

I also just spend a week in Japan, and a night in Long Island and had my own room.

To answer your question, I would do what work asked, if I wanted to work there. I have no problems sharing a room for a few days to a week. It isn't like this guy is going to be rubbing his junk on your pillow.

If you have big enough problem, pay for your own room. Personally, the few hours a night I am in there was never worth the extra cash I would have to pay.

I've done it plenty of times with no problems. I'm pretty close with my co-workers anyway, though.

I'm surprised companies are still requiring/asking people to do that in this day and age. It just seems weird to me.... don't think I've ever had to share a room with a co-worker.

That is what I'm shocked at. With all the HR rules about sexual harassment and all that, I would think shared rooms would be a big no-no

Re: Work related trip: Would you room with someone else?

I can't imagine being asked to share a hotel room with a co-worker that I knew, and I'd find it even creepier to share a room with someone that I didn't know! If it's important for me to take that business trip, then it's important enough to get me my own room.

Re: Work related trip: Would you room with someone else?

So I found out I can get my own room but it would cost me approx $90 a night. I think it will be 4 nights. Will probably do that. Money is not that tight so I can afford to do it.

Re: Work related trip: Would you room with someone else?

I've done it with no problems. Once roomed with a stranger who worked with the same company, and another time with the BF of a girl who was my Ex's friend.

I wasn't crazy about it but it was no big deal.

I did share a room with a coworker once that was/is also a friend of mine for 15 years, it was for a training course and "the room" was really a suite with a kitchen, so it wasn't 'cozy' or anything, we each had our own bathroom too.

Re: Work related trip: Would you room with someone else?

We're pretty close with the group I work in, so that wouldn't be much of an issue, depending on the length of time. A stranger? Unlikely.

Just do it once. I can think of several ways to ensure it's the last time they ask you to share a room with someone.

Maybe for security reasons but then again, Cali, much like Medellin, is relatively safe now.

Re: Work related trip: Would you room with someone else?

In my former job they always wanted to double us up when we traveled, which happened once a year. I told them the first year that I wanted my own room because I snore like a mountain lion. They didn't give me my own room. I snored like a mountain lion.

The second year, I had my own room.

Re: Work related trip: Would you room with someone else?

I understand that companies are trying to scrimp and save every dime that they can squeeze blood and pomegranate juice out of ... but I agree with j123vt_99 ... I can't believe with the hypersensitivity these days that a company would ask employees to share rooms.

That said, when I traveled back in the day with Hollywood Video, we would share rooms, but it was by choice because there was a group of us that were close friends. Often, that was how we would sell our boss on letting extra people go ("It's not going to cost you anything extra!").

I'd rather just share a room again than go to those lengths.

I'm shocked too. One incident and your company is on the hook for a huge payout. Hmmmm.

I'd pay for my own room.
