Has anyone successfully gotten rid of crab grass?

This is my first year in my house, and the front yard was overtaken by crab grass during the summer. Now, the crab grass is very long and dried out. Not sure what to do. Do I just wait for spring and fertilize...or fertilize now? I live in Illinois, so winter is on the way.

Any advice?

Re: Has anyone successfully gotten rid of crab grass?

Are you sure it is crab grass and not tall fescue?

Crab grass is a bright (lime) green. Tall fescue is dark green, and grows in large clumps. It is wider and taller (and more drought resistant) then the standard Kentucky blue grass or fine fescue.

Crab grass can be removed relatively easily using standard Weed and Feed products. You will not want to disturb the soil after applying (usually in the Spring).

Tall Fescue requires you to either dig out the clumps, or spot apply Round-Up and reseed those areas.

I don't know how old the yard is, but if you used cheap grass seed, I.E. "Contractors Mix" or something, then that contains a lot of the tall fescue. You will want to check the label on the replacement bags you buy, and avoid that, if it concerns you.

Re: Has anyone successfully gotten rid of crab grass?

Looking at pics online I'm pretty sure it's crab, although I have a couple of spots that look like tall fescue.

The house built in the late 80's, I personally didn't do anything this past spring, not sure what previous owners did.

I've had spots of crabgrass that I just pull out. It rarely comes back.

The best way to get rid of it is to mow it before it can make seeds. It's too late for that this year, but do it next year.

Interesting little fact: Crab grass seeds are edible, and taste a bit like sesame, only not as oily.

Yup. You can try all sorts of chemicals, but the best thing is to put on some gloves and rip it out. Easy and effective.

If that leaves exposed areas, re-seed those spots, and treat with a fertilizer over the winter that has a crabgrass deterrent in it (Scott's makes one).

Once it sprouts, anything that kills it kills grass too. But it is an annual. Use pre-emergent crabgrass killer in the spring to keep this year's seeds from sprouting next year.

Small amounts can be dug out before they go to seed, but if you have a lot, you will need to use pre-emergent chemicals for a few years.
