I bought a bus....now what?

I was at a school board meeting last night and we had a surplus auction. When the school needs to get rid of things, they first ask surrounding schools if they have a need of any of it. If they don't, they open it up to sealed bids. Of the 10 items, only about 2 had a bid on them, and one of them was a 1985 bluebird bus. 76 passenger and it runs good. Taken out of service only because we have a new bus coming in and no more room in the lot. So I put in a sealed bid of $50. Now I own a bus. Now what?

You can just start picking up kids at the bus stops and sell them on Craig's List.

Park it in the woods as an Into The Wild style hippy trap.

Sell it to a church or other small charitable group. I'm sure they'd be happy to have a bus for the low price of $500.

Why don't you ask "The Bus", he should know what to do with a bus!

Re: I bought a bus....now what?

Why did the district spend money on a new bus if it's only replacing a bus that still runs fine?

Re: I bought a bus....now what?

Do you have:
1.) A commercial driver's license?
2.) A place to park the bus?
3.) Any idea how much it costs to insure it?

I'm sure that you thought of all these things, and there's no way this was some silly impulse decision.
Right?

Duh, it's a way to provide supplemental income to the school board.

The district gets money from the state for the depreciation of the current fleet. In order to keep up with a proper depreciation schedule, you need to add buses when you have enough "depreciation money" to do so. That keeps more depreciation money coming in and keeps the fleet new.

Is it a waste to get rid of these in many instances? Sure. But if you are out of space and have enough new buses, you obviously do what is best for the school and the bus fleet. Generally, a smaller school will take it. A smaller school with fewer buses won't get as much depreciation and won't be able to keep a newer fleet as easily. But in this situation, nobody needed one.

We've gotten rid of several in the past, and this is the first time I've seen no one put in a bid.

Re: I bought a bus....now what?

You could turn it into a party bus or charter bus, hire a driver and rent it out. Or, you could convert it to a pretty sweet motorhome. You may need to get a CDL to drive it though. We see old school buses converted to motorhomes all the time. You just have to remove all the seats and put in the proper wiring and furniture. I'll bet you could have a super nice motor home for under $30K.
