Things to do in San Diego for a Day

My girlfriend and I will be in SD for a day in February before we leave on a cruise, so were looking for things to do. I was thinking about the Wild Animal Park, but I didn't really want to rent a car, and I see it's 35 miles away from downtown. Would it be worth the car rental to go visit, or should we just take a cab to the zoo? Or just visit Sea World and try to get eaten by Shamu?

Or should we do something else completely?

Edit: We're still looking for a place to stay as well, something not too expensive, but conveniently located near downtown would be nice.

Please have your girlfriend upload the video of this to Youtube. Bonus points if you succeed in your attempt. A big if you do this while dressed as a sardine.

You could always beat up a hippie. I hear San Diego has a surplus of 'em.

The zoo would be your best bet. There's also the USS Midway museum, if you wanna check out an aircraft carrier. You get to walk all over it. There are flight simulators in the hanger and there are guided tours/self-guided tours. It's right by where your ship will be.

You can take the trolley up to Old Town, if you're into historical landmarks. The trolley trip from downtown is about 10 mins.

There's Seaport Village, with unique shops, situated on the waterfront in downtown.

The San Diego Zoo is located in Balboa Park, which is home to dozens of awesome musuems. Depending on what your interests are, this might be another thing to check out. By the way, Balboa Park is also amazingly beautiful and perfect for a couple to enjoy an afternoon stroll through.

I hear the Lucha Libre restaurant is pretty cool.

Ever wanted to visit TJ? I think the train runs down to there (don't know myself, always driven), or take a taxi. Get off or park at san ysidro for a few bucks for upto 8 hours, and you can party it like college kids, or the red zone if you dare.

There's also Balboa Park.

You can go shopping at the outlet right before SD located near lego land in Carlsbad.

Or just enjoy the beach, I hear Pacific Beach is pretty cool, or downtown SD for drinks like at the casbah.

Sunset helicopter tour along the coast. Some real breathtaking images in that region.

Travel time to the Zoo is minimal. You can take a cab or do a trolley tour (which has a Zoo stop).

Hang out in the Gaslight District. Some nice restaurants and shops in that area.

We were in San Diego two weeks ago. The Wild Animal Safari is cool but it is going to cost like 40 or 50 a person to get in and then if you want the good tour, it is another 70 a person. (not exactly sure of the prices, the wife bought the tickets)

If you want animals the Zoo is the way to go. The Wild Animal Park is one of the most unique animal exhibits in the world, but it is very far from Downtown San Diego and pretty remote. At least a 90 minute drive each way when you factor in getting parked. It's cool, but the zoo is possibly the best in the USA and more accessable.

I also recomend Balboa Park. They've got a car museaum, air and space museum, IMAX, model railroad museum, botanical garden, etc. Very beautiful, and very fun.

The Midway aircraft carrier is very unique too. Not many places in the world where you can tour an aircraft carrier.

Oh, btw, the Wild Animal Park changed it's name to San Diego Zoo Safari Park.

The IMAX theater is a domed theater, so you will only see the "nature/space" IMAX movies. It's still pretty cool.

Thanks all. I think we'll probably do the zoo and Balboa Park.

If you're not too tired, there's lots of nice restaurants and music venues downtown to check out at night.

If by "nice restaurants" downtown you mean overpriced tourist traps, you are right. There are much better places in University Heights/Hillcrest/North Park/South Park/Kensington/Normal Heights.
