What did you want to be when you grew up, and are you it now that you did?
Thread title says it all, in the most awkward way possible. What did you want to be when you grew up? And now that you've (physically) grown up, are you that thing which you wanted to be? Or have your childhood dreams been shattered by harsh reality? Or are you still holding out hope and working towards that goal?
Discuss.

As a kid I was always interested in Marine Biology and other Ocean related studies but ended up in Radio.

Never really knew what I wanted to do, except for a job that "gave back", like a teacher, firefighter, or cop. Ended up a medevac dispatcher in a hospital emergency room. So I work with cops and firefighters every day, and get to tell them where to go.

In order of dreams - horse jockey in grade school (no), then psychologist in jr. high (no), then journalist/layout artist in high school and that's somewhat a yes. I'm a webmaster now and use those skills, albeit in an information age setting, for this career.

Pro Wrestler. Too bad I never had the genetics.
And yes, everyone laughed at me whenever my future career choice was mentioned.

I wanted to be an architect because Mike Brady was so cool.
Of course I had no idea that you need 7 years of college for that.
Ended up as a travel agent which was never on my radar but I knew I wanted to travel so it has worked out great.

Even though I am a network engineer, I did 21 years in the army, army reserve and army national guard. And being in the military was what my childhood was mostly about.

I think I wanted to be an astronaut, but that never happened. Ended up with my own home-based computer repair business...

A garbageman. Seriously.
I grew up to be a cop. That profession never even blipped on my radar until I was almost 24 years old.

I had no aspirations or dreams of any kind whatsoever when I was a kid. My parents never asked me what I wanted to be. My friends and I never talked about it. Looking back, that's kind of weird I guess. But even now, in my 30's, I'm very much a "here and now" person who doesn't dream (or worry) about the future too much.

I wanted to make movies, (features).
I ended up making some short films, music videos, industrial films, health documentaries, public television docs, worked on features as a prop assistant, line producing for food network shows.
Still haven't made anything I'm really proud of.

Not hard to please... Feature films are magic, and when I was a kid I wanted to create that magic.
Anything short of actually directing a feature film just doesn't fulfill my childhood dreams.
Okay - maybe I am hard to please.

In high school I wanted to play in the NBA. Parlayed my height into a basketball scholarship, but my dream of playing power forward for the Sacramento Kings died right about my sophomore year when even at 6'7 I was one of the smallest guys on my college team.
Had zero ambition of being a teacher until I was offered a fellowship to stay on as coach while earning my MA in Education. Fell in love with the profession my first week of student teaching. 13 years later, I love it as much as I did in Year 1. Cliche to say, but I found my calling. (One I basically fell into.)
Although I'd still rather be a power forward for the Kings.

Oh, and my dream of comic book artist failed when I watched what artists doing critiques did to the portfolio of best artist in my advanced life drawing course at WonderCon.
Ended up a Private Investigator. Life is funny that way.

I wanted to be a professional baseball player. If I couldn't be that, I wanted to be a pilot. I'm neither.

I wanted to be a garbage man when I was four then a fighter pilot when I was a bit older. Never achieved either. I'm an elementary school teacher now.

I wanted to be a computer programmer. I ended up being a report writer and business analyst, where I occasionally get to use those skills (in an extremely limited manner). I really enjoy my job, though, so it all worked out.

I wanted to be a neuro-surgeon, but I realized I lacked sufficient spacial reasoning abilities to have it be a realistic option. For a short while I wanted to be a business person. I did that for a bit, and it sucked. I have always loved academia, though since I have to pay bills, I only do that part-time. All and all I enjoy my work, I just wish it paid like an NBA player.
