How do you stay in shape in the winter?

i no longer live at the beach, and i am faced with trying to stay in shape when it is freezing cold and snowy. i currently cycle a couple days a week, i run 1-2x a week, and i do spin classes on the weekend. it has dropped into the 50s already, and i'm dreading what my days will look like with snow on the ground. I froze during my last couple of miles on my bike last night.

I currently own one pair of sweatpants from an old halloween costume, and I just bought a few different types of gloves to try out. I also bought a fleece hat and a bomber hat...it is ugly but really warm. I own some underarmour short/long sleeve shirts, but I need more.

what do people wear when they workout in the cold?

do you have any recommendations for pants/lower extremity clothing for running and cycling?

what are "the essentials"?

what do you do to stay in shape?

Staying in a shape is pretty easy in the winter. I suggest brownies.

Re: How do you stay in shape in the winter?

Similar position here, dislike exercising when it's cold outside. I have the Marine Corps marathon on Sunday which will be my last race of the year, after which I plan on spending most of my time on my new bike trainer, CycleOps Fluid 2. I just received it yesterday and after a test ride would easily recommend it as far as trainers go.

If you take spin classes I'm assuming you belong to a gym as well, just hit the treadmills or combine them with a spinning for a nice brick session. If you still want to get outside though, stick with athletic performance clothing made specifically for runners. Not only will it keep you warmer, chafing should be less of an issue. Check out Sports Authority, North Face, or any shops that cater to runners/cyclists. Plenty of gear available online as well, have ordered from these guys in the past.

I saw a guy the other morning running in black tights and although he looked a bit funny, I'm sure he was much warmer than I was freezing my ass off in shorts. Good tips here as well:

Best piece of cold weather work-out advice I ever got... If you are comfortably warm when you start you have too much clothing on. You will either be overheated or stripping it off and trying to carry it by the time you are done.

Re: How do you stay in shape in the winter?

When it's pleasant outside, I have a pretty steady mix of gym workouts and outdoor running. For the two weeks that it's cold in Texas, I just switch to a gym-only routine. It's usually enough for me to continue wearing shorts and just throw a hoodie on top, which I can easily shed when I'm inside the gym.

Re: How do you stay in shape in the winter?

the coldest it would get was maybe 60 at nnight, and that was rare.

that is a good tip about being warm befor starting. I have a shell jacket that has been great, but i'm not sure it will be enough (even w. a few layers) in the middle of winter.

Re: How do you stay in shape in the winter?

I'm dealing with the same thing now (wasn't running at this time last year)

For my head I just received the Under Armour hood (also trying to purchase everything in white as it gets dark really early up here in Washington and is dark until about 8am as well). Haven't used it yet.

For my jacket I bought a Reebok weather resistant/cold weather one. It's quite nice.

For long sleeve shirts I visited Target, they have a cold weather one that only cost about $16 that seems to work great. I'd love to have the Under Armour ones, but refuse to spend $50 for them.
I also picked up some running gloves from them, but they don't seem to keep my hands as warm as I would like.

Just ordered some cold weather running pants from Sports Authority, will report back after I try them out.

Re: How do you stay in shape in the winter?

Elliptical, weights, and cardio circuits, coupled with extra lean meals from October until February to make up for the holidays.

After experiencing Indiana weather for four years, I discovered that either a gym membership or an elliptical / treadmill is pretty much essential for staying trim over the winter. No matter how much you stay diligent with pumping yourself up or getting warm beforehand, there's still that twang of dread towards the cold that'll keep you from regular runs and such. Hell, there's enough dread in the thought of just getting out to your car to get to the gym! If there's a full-service facility where you take your spin classes, hop on that.

P90X if you're desperate, otherwise go to the gym and do your cardio there, or bend and stoop, just like the Mexicans.

Layer, suck it up and go... I wouldnt suggest running when its icy out though. I dont like to conditioning inside even when its snowy and cold as hell outside so I just do what I can until I just can't stand it outside anymore. Burpees in the snow will get you everytime.

"Desperate"? I'm doing a modified P90X schedule at home, and it's perfect. Love it!

I go to the gym year-round, so I'm not sure I understand your question.

Re: How do you stay in shape in the winter?

I dislike outside for working out. Too many distractions from concentrating. So I've always worked out indoors.

I stay in the same shape all year: round, cuddly, and squooshy, sort of like the Pillsbury Dough Boy in drag.

Re: How do you stay in shape in the winter?

Can anyone recommend the best pants/other for running in really cold weather? I have my upper-body taken care of, though I'm concerned about my legs.

Shoveling snow, pushing cars out of snowbanks, scraping off your windshield, putting on and taking off multiple layers of clothes, trying to walk on icy sidewalks, trying to walk on sidewalks with 2 feet of snow on them, trying to walk on icy sidewalks with 2 feet of snow on them, stamping your feet trying to get the snow off your shoes, trying to keep warm.

Re: How do you stay in shape in the winter?

If you really get into it, the cold weather is the best thing to keep you comfortable during the winter... The summer is way too hot here, I have to go indoors to the gym most days...

Winter... well, once you actually warm up and get moving, you dont notice the cold... I did a 5k race in 30 degree weather with 20 mph winds once... ok... that was cold...

I always remember a few years back as I trained for a half marathon going out to run... It was comforable for me to be running in shoes and shorts only... I happened to pass a guy totally bundled up in jeans, large jacket and beanie... couldnt help but laugh as I passed, he probably thought I was an idiot
