Any art experts here?

I found this old painting in my basement. It used to belong to the old lady that lived here and she got it from her mother. I know nothing about art. In the bottom right corner it says Marin 32(I believe its some artist John Marin). On the back is a tag that says #1543 Marin Print. Here a couple of crappy pics

I don't know the artist, but I feel it's safe to say, the artist was in his or her "paint like a grade schooler" period.

you guys are harsh. To me it looks like he scribbled a few penises here and there and painted a church in the background. Like I said I know nothing about art. I found John Marin on google but couldnt find this painting.

Re: Any art experts here?

Is it a painting or a print? The tag says print, you've been saying painting. If it's the actual painting (doubtful based on the tag), it's probably worth close to 7 figures.

Re: Any art experts here?

that is NOT a painting. It is a print.

Look at it with a magnifying glass. If you can see the little dots, it is a commercial reproduction, and the frame is worth more than the print.

If you don't see little dots, it may be a lithograph, and possibly worth something. Take it to an appraiser, or at least a professional picture framers, and get it valued.

Looks like it may have been worth $145 way back in the day, so you might be able to retire soon.

Re: Any art experts here?

It does look like a J. Marin lithograph to me. If it's a limited edition print it would be signed and numbered in the margin or the white border beyond the printed image. The subject is probably somewhere in Maine where he lived for many years. The image is new to me but does look typical. Guestimate: likely worth around 10K if a small printrun, hugely more if any hand coloring added. Make sure that it's a limited edition item and then you could try contacting the gallery representing the estate here in NYC; DC Moore.
I don't think it's a trash offset/commercial image or nobody would have paid $145 for it. If it were a painting then you're nouveau riche!

Re: Any art experts here?

Forgot something: the concept of numbering editions is relatively modern. This appears to be '32 and up to that time and even a little later, the artist would pull a number of prints but usually sign them only upon sale and not necessarily number them. Must be artist signed or stamped by the estate to verify authorship.

I wouldn't necessarily call myself an "expert", but I've always been extremely artistic. I think it's because of all the vaccines the government made me take.

Re: Any art experts here?

It looks like the piece called Phippsburg Maine done in 1932 according to the tiny picture at the top of the page http://wwar.com/masters/m/marin-john-news.html there. Maybe that'll help you find out edition size? Also seen here:

These people seem like a place to start:

Re: Any art experts here?

The "32" refers to the year Marin created it.

The tag on the back is a price tag from the gallery.

Apparently, the original has been lost for many years. It was apparently mislabeled as a print and sold to some woman, but she was never located / never came forward.
