Vegetarian 'discrimination'

This was in the local paper's opinions section. Someone's overreacting. I don't think I've seen a grocery store that 'forces' someone to walk past the meats. They may have to backtrack a lot but they can get to the produce & other sections without passing a carnivor's delight.

Death on display at grocery stores

I am sick to death of grocery stores' discrimination against vegetarians. I do not believe in the premeditated murder of any creature, and these grocery stores are shoving violence right in my face. When I have to walk past a tank full of lobsters waiting to be boiled and then see whole dead fish on ice, live clams stuffed in bags, and view shelves packed full of bloody raw carcasses, chickens and turkeys just to grab a loaf of bread, that is a violation of my civil rights as well as other vegetarians.

If grocery stores can have a "no candy" checkout line for persons with children, as well as stock aisles full of many different ethnic foods, then why not extend the same courtesy to vegetarians?

I should not have to get upset every time I go grocery shopping and I am sure I speak for many other vegetarians.

Re: Vegetarian 'discrimination'

Shopping at a store that caters to people with tastes other than your own will result in you being exposed to things you don't like. If it bothers you shop elsewhere.

No, it isn't.

Where is this imaginary civil right to not be offended that people keep coming up with?

Re: Vegetarian 'discrimination'

The author is a hyphenate: SHELLEY DAVIDE-CAMACHO

She apparently blames all non-vegetarians for Michael Vick's Dog Fighting thingy:
http://www.all-creatures.org/letters/20070831-sdc.html
Horrors inflicted at our bidding

As published in the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle - 31 Aug 2007

NFL player Michael Vick has pleaded guilty to federal dogfighting charges. Subjecting animals to any kind of abuse is evil and cowardly. The majority of persons who are judging Michael Vick are nothing more than hypocrites.

Millions of animals are slaughtered in factory farms each year. Not only are they forced to live in deplorable, inhumane conditions, they are drugged, tortured, maimed, slaughtered, boiled and skinned alive while fully conscious. Anyone who eats meat, cheese, eggs or drinks a glass of milk is directly responsible for the premeditated murder, torture and abuse of an innocent animal.

People who eat or use animal products are in effect paying slaughterhouse worker "hitmen" and "hired guns" to abuse and kill animals for them so they can wolf down a hot dog in five minutes. I have asked many self-proclaimed "dog/animal lovers" to view videos on the Web sites of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, all-creatures.org and Humane Farming Association, and the majority refuse because they don't want to know or get upset. Hypocrites!

And she owns a horse, subjecting it to evil and cowardly abuse by forcing it to carry her from place to place - that hypocrite!

Re: Vegetarian 'discrimination'

I've never seen a no candy checkout line. Likewise, I've never been in a grocery store or co-op where the fruits & veggies aren't in the first aisle.

Re: Vegetarian 'discrimination'

Maybe she should start going to a vegetarian grocery store, or get involved in a community garden. Inconvenient, you say? Then suck it up, and shed your tears as you walk by the meat section.

It is clearly stated in the Good and Welfare Clause of the U.S. Constitution.

I know how she feels.

Everytime I want to get a couple steaks I have to walk through rows of feminine products.

Re: Vegetarian 'discrimination'

Umm, yeah.

I am a vegan and walking by the meat section isn't pleasant, but it doesn't violate my civil rights. I can't say I know a single vegetarian or vegan (and I know lots of them) who would agree with this author. Just an extreme and not-so-representative position. Next.

Re: Vegetarian 'discrimination'

Most of the grocery stores around here have an isle or two of no candy lanes. The intent is so that the kids don't whine and cry for candy while waiting, not to avoid candy because you are offended by it.

Can this lady's 15 minutes be up now?

Vegetarians for the most part are nutjobs. Vegans are pretty much entirely made up of nuts.

I don't mind people not being big on meat, but the ones who have some kind of retarded hatred or fear of meat can go screw themselves.

Re: Vegetarian 'discrimination'

Well I am against the premeditated picking of live fruits. Walking past all those heads of lettuce screaming as they are about to be turned into a salad. They are HEADS of lettuce for god sakes, they share a name that sounds like the characteristic of a living creature. All this lettuce genocide must stop.

Wow. Why do these threads always bring out such animosity? Not that it bothers me (I do my thing and let others do theirs), it always just makes me wonder.

Anyways, vegan over and out.

Well I think the animosity comes from the fact that most vegetarians are nutjobs who have an unhealthy obsession with making others believe what they believe. Kind of like a lot of organized religion

hmmmm

I wouldn't call them nutjobs so much as zealots that will try & guilt the shit out of carnivores; well actually just the human ones.

The more people make life harder for vegetarians, the better. They killed Jesus.

There's a very fine line between nutjob and zealot, and the gap is so small that I would say 90 percent of zealots are actually in the nutjob camp.
