Underground (bees?) nest in my yard

Just cruising along on the riding mower I notice a hole in the backyard. About the size of a rabbit hole, which I thought it was. On the next pass I drive right over it and a swarm of some type of insect comes out. Didn't get a close look because I stuck to the far side of the yard till they calmed down and went back inside. From a distance they looked like some kind of small bee. Flew/hovered around the hole like bees would. Any ideas what they are?

Drop a smoke bomb down there to disorient them then stick the hose in the hole and drown em.

I think yellowjackets nest in the ground. They are hard to kill. Use Sevin, pour a couple of gallons down the hole (fast) and seal with a rock.

Gasoline works well too...just do it at dusk.

Definitely yellowjackets. This is about the time of year for stumbling across their nests in the ground. I have had some misfortune with mowing over their nests in the past and they don't take kindly to being disturbed.

an example of what my hand looked like when I was stung...

As mentioned wait until dusk and spray the nest. Hopefully this catches most of the yellowjackets in their nest.

Dad always used Kerosene, then when you light it up, it doesn't explode.

I always thought yellowjackets were large. These are no bigger than houseflies.

Yeah, you have bees/yellowjackets. Always ruined my day when I ran the push mower over a nest. I forget what I used, but I just mixed up a batch of something in a gallon jug and dumped it upside down over the hole and ran like hell.

You're probably thinking of a hornet.

Trust me, yellowjackets are very aggressive and their venom can pack a wallop. Once I was stung near my eye and my eye nearly swelled shut.

Re: Underground (bees?) nest in my yard

Just start up the mower & park it right over the hole running. They fly out and get chopped.

Wait until dusk. Pour boiling water down the hole. Bee stew.

I hate bees/wasps/hornets/yellowjackets/etc. so much. I had my hand swell like the pic above due to a sting. Wasn't fun at all.

I had one of those that was near my driveway. It was near enough that I drove by, lowered the window slightly, and sprayed the hell out of it. That knocked them down so that I could drown them and fill it with dirt.

Re: Underground (bees?) nest in my yard

Just dump a pint of gasoline in the hole, count to 10, and then drop in a match. The Flight of the Valkyries makes a satisfying musical accompaniment as the little bastards flee their own personal hell.

Re: Underground (bees?) nest in my yard

Get one of the can foggers that are used indoors. At dusk pop the top and shove it in the hole. Works every time.

Re: Underground (bees?) nest in my yard

Before resorting to the mass murder of innocent bees, you should at least try to negotiate a peaceful withdrawal. If negotiations fail, dump in a gallon of vinegar and cover the hole.

Oh yeah, I pushed a mower over one of these when I was about 11. That really, REALLY sucked.

I figured Dave would kill two birds with one stone and send in a dog. Whoever loses--Dave wins!

Unless he ends up with a dog with bees in its mouth, and when it barks it shoots bees at you.

Isn't that a weapon in Halo?

Any recommendation for carpenter ants in the lawn? Sevin hasn't done anything, liquid or powder.
