Things to do in Denver when you're (not) dead

I'll be in the Denver/Boulder area the week of Thanksgiving. Tuesday and Wednesday are my free days, so I was looking for something to do those days. I won't have a car, so I need to know if public transportation is semi-adequate or if renting a car will be an absolute necessity.

I know in the East, the Wednesday night before Thanksgiving is one of the busiest going-out/partying/drinking nights of the year.

What is a seasonally-appropriate thing to do in the outdoors? Can I expect snow on the ground, or just bitter coldness? Is Rocky Mountain worth a day trip? For unrelated reasons, an area with natural beauty would be nice to find.

I was in Denver last year just before Thanksgiving and there was lots of snow.

If you get stuck downtown there's always a visit to the Denver Mint. Must make reservations online and as early as possible. It fills up fast.

I go to Denver every year at Thanksgiving and you're missing out if you can't get downtown for a night. The city is absolutely beautiful and decked out in Xmas gear. I know there is a Broncos game on Sunday night (my brother has season tix so I'll be there if football is your thing.

I also highly recommend some skiing. I've taken the family to Breckenridge and it's beautiful.

King Tut exhibit should still be going on at the art museum, if you're into that sort of thing.

I didn't hit it in Philly or NY, but maybe it's worth seeing in Denver.

Re: Things to do in Denver when you're (not) dead

Denver is one of my favorite cities. To determine what to do is more about eliminating what you don't want to do.

Yea, the mint is cool. But I like the outdoor stuff. The highest parts of Estes Park will be close, but much still open. Even if you don't ski, or the slopes aren't open yet a run up to Vail, Aspen or even Brek is an awesome drive and fun to walk around.

Downtown (LoDo) is great! Again, great to walk around and see the sights. You can also go to the big Coors factory, but I prefer the Anheuser-Bush brewery up in Fort Collins they have the dalmatians and Clydesdale. And if your going up there, check out the New Belgium Brewery (home of Fat Tire).

Estes park is cool around 5pm when the deer come out and a coyote is in the woods stalking them

If you make it to Estes Park, take a tour of The Stanley and see the room that was the inspiration for "The Shining."

If you find yourself in LoDo (downtown), then you must go to the bar at the Oxford Hotel, called the Cruise Room. Order a mojito or martini, and you'll feel like you are in a speakeasy in the 20's.

Go to the Denver Aquarium to see the tigers!

Spoiler:
Yes... TIGERS. At the aquarium. Not the zoo...

Cool place. Wish the speakeasy behind the basement pie shop in Larimer Square was open.
