Just curious, if someone has a ring on the finger where the wedding band normally is, do you assume they are married?

Well if it's a woman I assume at least engaged.

What if I think anyone (man or woman) with a ring is married? How do I choose that option on the poll?

Hah, yeah I assumed it was a multiple choice poll and clicked both of the first two options so technically I just chose the male option.

I generally don't care if people are married and I am uninterested in jewelry, so I am stuck with the twikoff option once again

I assume they are engaged/married....but if they keep talking to me, then it is up to interpretation.

Sure. I've met women who wore a ring there to keep guys away, but then they'd take it off if they found someone. Of course, they still could have been married, but in their mind and that room they were not. Honestly, it is hard to tell the difference these days.

Re: Do you automatically assume someone is married if they have a ring on ring finger

If the ring is on her left hand ring finger, I assume she's engaged or married. Not sure what the rule is for the right hand; the left hand thing may be old and out of fashion now so it may be both.

It depends on what country they are from, but if they are American this is a natural assumption.

I assume a ring means married but it's never stopped me from trying (and even succeeding twice).

I thought it was left hand ... but this might explain all those discomforting looks I get when I ask girls I don't know if they would like to dance at weddings.

Re: Do you automatically assume someone is married if they have a ring on ring finger

Since I've been married 33 years and am already taken, I don't really pay any attention to whether a person is wearing rings or not. My wedding band (made by my father-in-law out of stainless steel) got in the way of work, so I went for years without wearing it & never thought twice about it since I wasn't looking & didn't expect anybody else to be.

Besides, what does it matter if someone is married or not if you're just involved in a business exchange or casual encounter at a checkout line, etc.? If you get to know the person through work, church, community, etc., one of the first things you'll discover is whether or not they're married.

Wouldn't it seem to present an awkward situation if you catch someone is staring at your hands? I can see it more with women, who might be wearing more and fancier jewelry, but most men I know don't wear many rings other than wedding bands, class rings, or a service ring (in other words, pretty basic stuff).

Re: Do you automatically assume someone is married if they have a ring on ring finger

Until I got married this year, I would never pay any attention to the ring finger. I still don't really. Jewelry just isn't something I notice.
