Gunman Shot at Local High School While Classes in Session

This happened yesterday about 4 miles from our house. I used to teach at a school that feeds into this high school, although the last of my former students graduated last year. My wife's BFF is very close friends with the principal, and this news story sounds really accurate (according to the insider account we got). The news ticker on some national cable news shows had a reference to the incident scrolling across the bottom of the screen last night.

We also got first-hand accounts from parents. I teach a Sunday School class of 7th-9th-graders, and one of the freshman girls was in a class very close to the incident. Her class was huddled in a corner for about an hour, holding hands, crying, and praying. They also had to go by the shooting scene on their way out of the building.

One thing that stood out is that the SRO rotates among five different schools, so it was Providential that she was on the scene yesterday. From some accounts, the disturbed individual was trying to pull the fire alarms to get the kids out of class & allow him access to them. One the other hand, he might have been trying to commit suicide by cop.

Is your wife one of the students at the high school?

There are a lot of disturbed kids out there today.

*edit*

Nevermind, it was an adult. There are a lot of them too.

The reporter did a nice job of getting a lot more details than I expected, though I am wondering about this quote, “Gudger is the “bomb-diggity,” Collins said. “She goes out of her way to protect us.”

Your post displays a reading skills gap since I clearly stated that all of my former students had already graduated.

Fail!

P.S. The principal has already graduated, too.

I think the implication was that by using the term "BFF" it appeared that your wife must still be in highschool.

If there is a necessity to explain a joke, the joke has failed.

Well, it was a monday.

But I can see no reason, 'cos there are no reasons. What reason do we need to be shown...?

Oh, I 'got it' the first time. That's why I added the postscript about the principal also having graduated (in case the poster thought I didn't "get it"). I just didn't think it was that funny.

I would have replied that, no, my wife is still in grade school, but that would have just compounded the level of un-funniness.

Although I know this is Otterville, after all, it still indicates that we have gotten jaded when an armed intruder can enter a high school, hold a gun to the principal's head, threaten to pull the fire alarm (presumably to present students as targets), and have to be killed by police officers in the school hallways...and we take it all in stride.

Either this sort of thing happens all the time now or in a post-Columbine society, we expect a higher body count in order for such incidents to be newsworthy outside of the immediate locale.

What does any of that have to do with the boomtown rats?
