Man killed on Expressway

A new nominee for Darwin Award:

Man Riding Bike on Dan Ryan Struck, Killed by Car
Updated: Monday, 30 Aug 2010, 7:10 AM CDT
Published : Monday, 30 Aug 2010, 7:08 AM CDT

Sun-Times Media Wire

Chicago - A bicyclist identified as Christopher Hippchen was fatally struck by a vehicle on the Dan Ryan Expressway Sunday night on the South Side.

Emergency crews responded about 9:10 p.m. to a pedestrian struck by a vehicle in the northbound lanes of the Dan Ryan Expressway near 55th Street, an Illinois State Police District Chicago trooper said.

Hippchen, 28, of 5240 N. Sheridan Rd., was dead on the scene, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

The person was apparently riding a bicycle, according to the trooper, who said State Police have not determined why the person was riding a bike on the expressway.

The man was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, sources said. He was struck by a black Jeep SUV, which had to be towed from the scene.

Alcohol does not appear to be involved, sources said.

All northbound lanes were reopened as of 12:20 a.m., a state trooper said.

State Police continue to investigate.

As much as I hate those types, this story doesn't indicate he was a dirty hippy. Unless he changed his name to Hippchen I guess.

Re: Man killed on Expressway

Nothing to investigate.

Many people in my area jog, walk, bike on the shoulders of roads with a posted speed of 50. Often it is right next to the paved path.

I think many people have a fear of sidewalks and bike paths and feel it is safer in the roadway.

He was RIDING A BIKE -- how much more obvious could it be that he's most likely an eco-terrorist? Wake up!

Re: Man killed on Expressway

Unlike highways with a max speed of 50,
our freeways have minimum speeds. Keep Up or Be Gone.
A guy on a (pedal) bike isn't going to make the 50 MIN.

Well, around here it does usually mean you are either a hippy or an alcoholic.

I notice they point out that he wasn't wearing a helmet.

I don't think it would have helped.

Yea. Me neither. Till I read what an expressway is. I figured that "expressway" meant "highway" or "interstate". As in "crazy motherfucker rode his bike down the highway and got hit".

I admittingly had to look "expressway" up on Wikipedia. Looks like other people are in the same boat as me - as it's a loosely used term (according to Wiki).

So nothing to see here, folks. Move along.
