No kidding. I saw the thread title and was excited about the big fight that I must have missed this afternoon.

The Greeks lost most what Alexander conquered long before Manzikert. This was more like inept leadership from the Byzantines that caused the failure at Manzikert. They were not prepared for the hit and run tactics of the Seijuks. The Emperor and the generals were stupid.

Re: The Battle of Manzikert took place today

i read the short version of A Short History of Byzantium and I think by that time most of the Roman army was mercenaries and they didn't have a professional standing army

Little known fact, Rome was sacked 661 years prior to this event, almost to the day.

It didn't so much take place today as today is more like the anniversary of it.

Yup, and the first part looked like scenes from Kingdom of Heaven as I saw some Knights Templar in there. So it was supposed to be the battle of Manzikert with clips from the 5th century spliced with clips portraying the 12th century as well.

Looks like Kingdom of Heaven the second part is just King Arthur.

Edit: Vega beat me to the first part.

Re: The Battle of Manzikert took place today

First part: ?
Second part: King Arthur
Third part: Excalibur

I don't remember the first part in Kingdom of Heaven, but maybe it's from the Director's Cut.

Re: The Battle of Manzikert took place today

Very sad. My condolences to those here who have ancestors who were lost in this battle. I know it must be hard.
