1600 Years Ago Today: Sack of Rome

Obviously not breaking news, but an interesting bit of calendar trivia. Also an interesting comparison of 0410-08-24 as Rome's "9/11."

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-11066461
Tuesday marks the 1,600th anniversary of one of the turning points of European history - the first sack of Rome by an army of Visigoths, northern European barbarian tribesmen, led by a general called Alaric.

It was the first time in the 800-year history of the Roman Empire that the city had been successfully invaded. The event had reverberations around the Mediterranean. . . .

That's pretty good.

I would add:
*A pretty workable calendar (needed a minor correction in 1582). If they hadn't fallen, it probably would have been corrected before.
*Hydraulic cement (sets under water). Several inventions mentioned in the video depend on it.
*The alphabet we use today

Of course, they brought us those damn Roman numerals too.

I wonder if the Emperor Honorius watching the Visigoths coming over the Seventh Hill truly realized that the Roman Empire was about to fall. This is just another page in history, isn't it? Will this be the end of our civilization – a turn of the page?

by that time the Roman Empire was based out of Turkey. I don't think too many people cared about Italy. Justinian tried to reconquer Italy but it was mostly out of tradition that the Roman Empire should control the city called Rome.

Eh. The sack of Rome was nothing. The steamer trunk of Rome was much more impressive.

That punk didn't have a clue. He didn't witness the sacking as he was hold up in Ravenna over 200 miles away.

Captain Picard lied to me? Next you'll tell me Nelson didn't tour the Victory before Trafalgar.

Well if Picard said it, then it's ok.

I believe scribes of the time quoted Alaric as saying. "Yeah bitches! How ya like me now!" when he crossed under the Salarian Gate.
