Please help: AC isn't working

So I noticed our house was getting hot. I went outside and the AC was running (kind of loudly) but the fan was not moving.

I went into the basement and the pipe coming into the furnace was VERY hot (the small one that isn't insulated).

I turned off power to the AC and now the AC isn't running at all.

Any ideas? Should I just call a company.

Your house is haunted, probably by an ice demon.

Re: Please help: AC isn't working

Wait 24 hours(with it off) and see if it works. Your unit could be frozen. If it starts working again you need to have the unit cleaned and replace the filters. Should cost you 60 bucks. If it does not work, your outside fan motor is shot, and you will need that replaced. If your unit is less than 5 years old it should be covered, but if not it will cost you about 250-350 bucks if it is the fan.

Re: Please help: AC isn't working

The fan, or its wiring or controls, is shot. Call somebody. The outside fan is needed to exhaust heat. The unit will overheat without it, so don't run it until repaired.

If the outdoor fan motor isn't running, that's why your house is hot. It may be the fan motor, or it may be the controls that tell the fan to turn on. You don't want to overheat the compressor, because that's the expensive part. Don't run it and call a repair guy.

Do you have a VMS alarm on your A/C unit. If not, then that is your problem.

Re: Please help: AC isn't working

If the compressor is running but the fan is not, it is likely that the start/run capacitor has failed for the fan. There may be two capacitors, one for the compressor and one for the fan, or there may be a single capacitor with three terminals that is actually two caps in a single package.

Either way the AC repair man is going to charge you about $100-300 to replace a $10 part from Grainger and an hour of his time.

I'm not sure what to tell you, he never seemed like like a great worker.

I wouldn't hire him.

Re: Please help: AC isn't working

Sounds like a bad motor or capacitor. Unless you know what you're doing, I'd call a technician.

yep...pistol pete is right. probably your run/start capacitor. $35 if you know what you're doing, or $150 if you're twikoff.

Re: Please help: AC isn't working

Capacitor, or the fan motor is shot.

What you can do as a short-term fix is to open up your outside unit and use a heavy duty fan to blow over the coils (the condenser). In the meantime, when the compressor is running (the thing that sounds like a refrigerator) use a volt meter to see if any power is going to the fan motor. If there is, then it's probably the fan motor. If there isn't then it's probably the capacitor.

What brand is your unit, and how old is it?

^ Be careful poking around in there. 220V shocks are no fun.

Re: Please help: AC isn't working

As long as he's not in the electrical box he'll be fine. What I'm talking about is having him test the two wires going to the fan motor, while the compressor is running.

But yeah, point taken. Electricity is dangerous, don't do anything stupid.

Re: Please help: AC isn't working

I took the first few posters advice and just called someone. I was just freaking out because we have a 1 month old preemie at home and I was worried about him getting too hot.

They came out and fixed it on Monday (course it took a LONG time to get the house cool in this heat wave up here). It was a bad capacitor. Just took the kids over to a neighbors.

After watching him change it out, I could have easily done it, but I can't even get the dam timer on my garage lights to work (dam 3 way switches), so I pretty useless when it comes to electrical work (although I did fix our dryer when the heat sensor went bad. that was a big accomplishment for me)

Thanks for the responses.

For < $50 in parts, you make an air conditioner.
