Car Flats: They Are The Suck

Just got back from the grocery store and noticed a tire was going flat.

So, no big deal I thought. I figured I'd just change the tire with the spare, but the last 30mins I've been trying like hell to get the bolts loosened. Those suckers aren't coming loose and I'm gonna have to drive the car to the nearest Les Schwab for flat repair.

Flat tires suck.

I don't have a cell phone.

But I will admit, one of my hands was rather busy.

Ok, maybe both hands.

That's why I have AAA. Years of owning older cars with bolts that were literally rusted onto the wheels made me spring for the $50 a year for membership.

Re: Car Flats: They Are The Suck

It's the people in the tire shops that put the lug nuts on too tight that are the suck

The nuts should be somewhere between 80-95 ft lbs depending on your car (trucks maybe more) but most dip shits that work in tire shops put them on at 150-200 ft lbs so you need an impact wrench to take them off and it damages a lot of other stuff having them that tight.

Go kick the guy in the nuts that last touched your tires.

Otherwise, changing a flat is easy as shit

Re: Car Flats: They Are The Suck

My insurance company is State Farm, and the tow truck insurance is about $8 a year. I've only used it twice in ten years, and I'm still ahead.

I once had to put a ten foot pipe on the tire iron and bounce on it to loosen the lug nut. Now, every time I visit a tire shop, I loosen the nuts when I get home and use my torque wrench to tighten them to the proper setting.

My car calls for 158 ft lbs so some are supposed to be tight.

I had this problem and took my foot and stepped down on the tire iron. Did the trick!

Yes, as I stated, some may be more, my bigger point is the assholes in the tire shops don't check what YOUR car should be while it is there and just put any random tightening from the impact wrench.

I am surprised to see a "car" take that much, what make/model is it?

Using the normal sized tire iron that came with my car and only using moderate force (not my max), I can easily tighten a lug to 100 ft lbs BY HAND

I thought this thread would be about cars renting apartments in the UK.

That's what I do as well. Went through a summer a few years ago with 3 flats and I got damn good at changing them. I considered putting a 3 ton floor jack in my car.

New style CTS-V. It seems high to me. At least I don't have to worry about any shop over tightening them.

Yeah, I had no idea what a "car flat" was until I opened the thread.

----

I went ahead and called AAA and they got the bolts loosened and put the spare on. I'll be getting the flat fixed today.

Not sure why I was even thinking about driving the car with a flat to a nearby service center.

My car uses "lug bolts" to hold the wheels on!

I have a 4-foot iron pipe that I can slide onto my lug wrench. Simple physics works every time.

Re: Car Flats: They Are The Suck

Last time I had a flat, I didn't feel like changing the tire or waiting for AAA because I had to go to work, so I used a can of Fix-A-Flat or whatever it's called. Pumped my tire right up, and was still good for me to get the tire fixed after work. Always travel with a can of it.

Re: Car Flats: They Are The Suck

I almost got that stuff but wondered if it would inject a bunch of gooey mess inside the tire. But it would be a good idea to have a can in the trunk regardless, if I'm ever in an area where AAA is hours away or even unable to help.

I wouldn't use that if your car is equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system(TPMS). It will screw up the sensors.

This actually works. It's the same shit tire shops use to repair your tire if the damage isn't bad and they charge you up to $30. Although, it does state on the package you should still bring the tire in for repair. I guess it's says that to cover their ass.

It works great if you have run flats and most cars that do have run flats don't have any equipment to jack the car up.

Re: Car Flats: They Are The Suck

My car came with some sort of kit like that (no spare - tires are too big to fit plus they are staggered anyway). Who needs a spare anyway when you can't get the nuts off?

Re: Car Flats: They Are The Suck

Might as well mention this here. A couple years ago, I was on a highway and saw a guy with a flat on the shoulder, taking the spare out of his trunk. A car slammed into him from behind going at least 40mph. His legs went one direction, upper body the other. Worst thing I've ever seen obviously.

Never stop on a major road. Stories like that happen often. Drive on your fucking rims until you're somewhere safer.
