World Sauna Championship finalist dies

WTF?

A Russian finalist at the World Sauna Championships in Finland died Saturday and the event was suspended, according to the organizers, the AP reported.

Both of the events finalists -- Russia's Vladimir Ladyzhensky and Finland's Timo Kaukonen -- were rushed to the hospital after collapsing during the competition, in which contestants are made to endure temperatures of 230 degrees Fahrenheit (110 degrees Celsius) for as long as they can. Ladyzhensky later died.

The event, which has been held since 1999, was taking place in Heinola, Finland, which is 86 miles north of Helsinki.

While police have launched an investigation, the organizer of the event, Ossi Arvela, said in a statement: "All the rules were followed and there was enough first aid personnel. All the competitors needed to sign in to the competition with a doctor's certificate."

The Finnish news agency STT reported that both men suffered burns on their body and that the competition was cut short after six minutes.

A personal record. He literally endured it for as long as he could.

Those are some nasty pictures.

I just took a sauna earlier tonight - it was nowhere near 230 degrees though.

The guys in the picture in the sauna look like they're cold. They've got their arms crossed and the pic where the one guys is out of the sauna looks like he has ice on his head.

Rick Reilly from ESPN had a bizarrely fascinating account of competing in a sauna competition. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/news/story?id=5198604

Re: World Sauna Championship finalist dies

I had read that ESPN article. And all I could think of is why? Really these guys get blisters and their skin comes off. I mean will there be a competition for how many knives you can stick inside you?

What a whacko idea. At least in most sports, you have a chance to avoid brain damage, but with this one, it seems to be a goal.

Re: World Sauna Championship finalist dies

Saunas should not be hotter than 110 degrees Fahrenheit. (43 Celsius) And, that's still dangerous.

I was just remembering that the Bacon Explosion is supposed to be cooked at a lower temperature than that sauna.

Whoa, the competition was cut short after 6 minutes. How was there that much blistering?

Re: World Sauna Championship finalist dies

In the ESPN article, Timo won after 11 minutes. In this competition, Timo collapsed after 6 minutes, and the other guy died. I don't think the sauna was on the correct setting.

Also, this is insane.

The thing that got me about it is they're competing for such crap prizes. When I started the article, I figured the winner would get at least a couple thousand... but sauna speakers? I don't care if they're insanely fricking nice or WORTH a couple thousand, it's still crap.

You have no idea how much the melting-resistant type costs.

Yea, I'd say u may be right. The competition is who can last the longest. So these guys probably thought 5-6 minutes was no big deal.
