Brawl at Graduation Leads to Charges...

...but it's a KINDERGARTEN graduation.

Let This Be a Lesson: Brawl at Graduation Leads to Charges

What started as a kindergarten graduation ceremony led to criminal charges.

Two women were charged with misdemeanors this week in connection with a brawl at the June ceremony.

According to the Victorville Daily Press, Queiona Burt, 31, and Marine Ruth Vargas, 29, face up to 90 days in jail if convicted. The newspaper, citing court records, reported they were charged with interference with peaceful conduct on campus and unlawful acts committed at school grounds.

The ceremony for kindergarten graduates at Puesta del Sol Elementary wasn't one for the childhood photo album. The brawl involved more than 20 people, most of whom are parents, at the Victorville school.

"According to witness statements, it appears a few parents went over to a field away from the actual ceremony to discuss something when the alleged fight broke out," a sheriff's spokeswoman told the Victorville Daily Press after the fight.

That argument stemmed from a Facebook comment regarding the Los Angeles Lakers, Burt told authorities.

The school was placed on lockdown and no parents were allowed on school grounds for a sixth grade graduation assembly the follow day.

Vargas and Burt were arrested the day after the fight. A school district representative said more arrests could come.

"We're looking at whatever we can do to hold those people accountable," said Maureen Mills, assistant superintendent for Educational Services for the Victor Elementary School District. "We cannot control the parents' behavior. The staff handled it in a very professional way and we will move forward."
Silly Lakers fans...

Re: Brawl at Graduation Leads to Charges...

The saddest part of that article was banning parents from the 6th grade graduation assembly the next day.

Do we really need a 6th grade graduation assembly or even a 6th grade graduation for that matter? I still think it is silly to have an 8th grade promotion but we do it every year. However, what have 6th graders graduated to?

I agree in that all these silly end-of-school-year celebrations have gotten to be too much.

In response to your question, I know some areas elementary schools go up to 6th grade. I'm assuming that's the case in the school mentioned in the article.

You're probably right about it being a school that goes up to the 6th grade and if that is the case then I can see why they would have a "graduation". However, I still think these things tend to make kids believe that they have accomplished something and everything starts going downhill from there for some of them. This is likely what happened to that Jessie Slaughter girl.

Grade school graduations are common in areas where there is a good chance that the kid won't graduate from high school.

I thought every school everywhere had "graduations" for every grade K through 8th. They may call them end-of-the-year ceremonies or something else, but I had them for all my years in school and so did my niece and nephew.

Re: Brawl at Graduation Leads to Charges...

Considering that some of the rioting parents of kindergarten students were also parent of sixth graders, I can see why they shut the parents out.

If you can't behave yourself, you can't play.

When are we going to colonize Mars, so we can get rid of all these idiots?

I completely agree.

I'm picturing the invitiations now, "Please attend my son's Villification Ceremony this coming Saturday at 4pm."

I don't know anything about Victorville (I mean, I've heard of it since I moved to SoCal, but I don't think I've ever been there), is it a hick town?

We had some small "ceremony" (no parading in caps/gowns, just a student assembly) when we finished grade school and junior high, but it wasn't the "graduation" that happens now. Now, I see friends' children in pictures of them "graduating" from kindergarten, 6th grade, 8th grade, etc, and they get caps/gowns for every graduation! That's NUTS, IMO.

Re: Brawl at Graduation Leads to Charges...

I've never understood these graduations either. I see 8th graders all of the time walking around school and acting like they are hot shit ... in my mind, I just think ... wait until next year, my friend, when you'll be pissing in your pants.
