YADT: I just had a manic episode

Wow, now I know how David Koresh felt.

I was prescribed Zyban by a doctor in order to aid smoking cessation. I quit for a while about 2 years ago but recently picked it up again. My doctor advised that using a drug like Zyban or another anti depressant in a low dosage would aid with the withdrawal symptoms and I would be more likely to quit for good. Anyway, Zyban did not work out for me because I had a major allergic reaction to it, and he switched me to Zoloft, which as I understand it is used primarily for the treatment of depression.

So after taking the first dose yesterday, about 24 hours later i had a sudden onset of a manic episode. At first I couldn't tell that anything was wrong until I started yapping my head off at my friend. She kept staring at me and is used to my absurd behavior, but this time she was concerned that I was having some sort of nervous breakdown. I reassured her I felt great, and that's when the enormous delusions of grandeur came on. After about 12 hours of believing myself to be God incarnate, it finally tapered off and I crashed, almost totally exhausted.

Anyone ever deal with these symptoms before? from my research online it looks like manic-depressives or people with depression are the most likely to go on a manic episode, but i've also read that people use it recreationally because the drug gives people who are "normal" a high. Anyone ever encounter anything like this before?

You mean you haven't been taking Zoloft or something like it for quite a while?

No, I haven't. This is my first experience with it.

Not sure where you read that but it's total nonsense.

Taking a SSRI such as Zoloft will NOT make a "normal" person "high".

Someone with bi-polar dissorder can be flipped into a manic phase by taking anti-depressants such as Zoloft without a mood stabilizer on board. Something like lithium or Depakote.

Re: YADT: I just had a manic episode

I see... I guess this means I should be checked out in case I have a mood disorder. I don't really exhibit any symptoms of a mood disorder though. I don't go through highs and lows of depression and mania like bipolar disorder and i'm not chronically depressed. It could probably be sensitivity to medication though.

I think I'd look into e-cigs if I wanted to quit smoking.

What you described isn't common for someone taking a dose or two of a SSRI but as you said, you could have had some strange reaction.

Doesn't sound like you have any symptoms of a mood disorder. If you have insurance and it would make you feel better discuss it with your MD as I am NOT dispensing medical advice.

Stating the obvious, but donít take any more Zoloft or other SSRI for that matter. Odd that a MD would use a SSRI for smoking cessation.
Zyban aka Wellbutrin hits dopamine which is thought to have some effect on stopping the urge to smoke. SSRI's have essentially no effect on dopamine.

Regardless i'm stopping immediately. I've read enough on the internet right now about adverse reactions, even to just one dose. While it's true that SSRIs don't hit the dopamine system, nicotine certainly does affect serotonin activity.

e-cigarettes don't work. They're just as bad as real cigarettes. The problem is that nicotine is inherently toxic and is a carcinogen.

cigs have thousands of chemicals in them. e-cigs have only a few ingredients. no way they are just as bad.

Actually e-cigarettes were found to have just as many additives and chemicals as regular cigarettes.

Just do cold turkey. 3 days of living hell and then you're good for life. Worked for me.

Same here, although I wasn't a hardcore smoker. Was getting tired of it, got sick one winter and stopped while my body was healing. Never picked up another after that. It's called will power and balls.

well other than the nicotine extract you can buy everything to make your own liquid at a baking supply store. i dont think you can do that with cigarettes unless you go to a store that sells arsenic and god knows what other chemicals..

One of the best ways in the real world to determine if a drug will get someone "high" is the general "street value" without a Rx.

Feel free to check the prices of any SSRI in your local market.

But, whatever works for you.
