Another Work Thead: Pseudo-Sabotage

So, there is a bunch of stuff going on at work, department heads leaving, promotions, etc.

So, now there is a new supervisor of my work. He has been there a while, but overall clueless about the work I do. It is the Dilbert principle in full effect.

Now he wants to micro-manage everything that is done. For example, I cannot let you know the parts are ready, but I need to tell him and he can tell you.

Now my dilemma is, do I let him screw things up, hoping his ineptitude will come to light to those above, but make my job harder in the long run. Or do I continue as I have been, doing good work, and letting him think he is a terrific manager.

The first way could have repercussions being when things get screwed up, shit will most likely flow downhill and make me look bad. However, making him look good probably won't do much for me in the long run.

I am sure the easy answer would be to keep my head down, cash my paycheck and be thankful I have a job, of course dying a little inside everyday.

I'd rather work as a hot dog cart vendor living in a studio apartment if it was something I loved rather than getting wealthy while working somewhere I hated. Dying a little inside every day seems like an awful life.

Re: Another Work Thead: Pseudo-Sabotage

Just remember that what you do at work is on my time, because I'm the owner. And you will represent me perfectly at all times. No eating at work, no drinking at work, and if your hair is over your ears, it's because you don't wash your ears. And I hate unwashed ears. That's why I, Edward Mike Davis, founded this ear washing company. Shape up and shut up, you shaggy-eared alcoholic hippie bastards!

Cordially,
Edward Mike Davis

Perhaps it isn't that bad, but it certainly allows me the chance to do what I like outside of work.

There the rub, how do I avoid making him look good, without making myself look bad. I am imagining a literal application of what he says, with no corrective or helpful suggestions on my part.

At what type of company do you work? Is there perhaps any type of acid around that might find its way into the supervisor's face?

The guys that last in this business are the guys who fly straight. Low key, quiet. But the guys who want it all, chicas, champagne, flash... they don't last.

Document everything you can and give him enough rope to hang himself.

At any given time, there is probably 50 gallons of BCP which consists of 2 parts 85% phosphoric acid to 1 part 49% hydrofluoric acid to 1 part 70% nitric acid.

I'm sure you know this in your heart that the most likely result is going to be somewhere in between. Chances of him look stupid in front of his superior because you screwed things up is pretty low as these kind of managers are skilled in talking themselves out of troubles and being pretentious. On the same token, just because you're doing good work won't automatically translate to him being a terrific manager either. The most likely result is you living a state of misery and him continuously getting on your case. Why go out of your trouble to live in this state of misery? If you have a preconceived notion that a manger is bad manager then chances are 100% of things he does will be lousy and shitty.

You also haven't commented about the politics of this new boss. If he is family or friends with someone high up in the company, you are doomed and all of his failures will most likely be blamed on those under him.

Situations like this suck, not much you can do.

Spoiler:

or you can really be dirty and get him in a room alone with you where you know there are people close by. talk shop with him for 10 minutes or so

THEN!

Go running and screaming out of the room where the two of you are alone and into the eyes and ears of the other people that are close by and tell everyone that he told you in order for you to be able to keep your job that you had to drop your pants and let him blow you. File a complaint with HR and enjoy the show

Not family, but definitely a kiss-ass.

I was thinking more along the lines of not pointing out mistakes (to him), or not suggesting changes that could/would help things.

I know for a fact that suggesting something to him would then be presented to his superiors as his idea.

But that would make it even worse for him because then he'd be working for Two-Face.

Re: Another Work Thead: Pseudo-Sabotage

I went through a similar situation. My company moved, my manager was fired and my position was eliminated without anyone telling me. The new manager had no interest in my ideas, expertise or experience(even though he told me and everyone else he wanted their input). He wanted all the glory for himself, so I went the dying a little inside every day/going through the motions route until I was let go.

For the longest time, I went into work every day and busted my ass and I still got the shaft. So my next job I am going this route.

Only in certain cases will working hard get you anywhere; most of the time it only gets you tired.

Now with a career, it's a bit of a different story...

Then again...

Re: Another Work Thead: Pseudo-Sabotage

Not in my circumstances right now.

1) Very narrow field, 2 places in state, maybe 10 nationally.
2) This situation has motivated me to go back to school, although I am already more educated than he
3) Jobs in MI pretty much suck, are we still highest in unemployment?
