Kindle - why would the 'old' model be selling for so much?

Hey all - I hope this is okay for this forum. It's electronics, but it's more about the mindset of people, and not the technology itself...I think. Please forgive me if it belongs elsewhere.

As you probably know, Amazon announced a new generation in Kindles late last week. The Kindle3 is smaller, sleeker, and has free wi-fi and 3G support.

I love my Kindle and my sister has been wanting to borrow it, so I thought now might be a good time to purchase an older unit at a really good price for her as a gift (because I'm not willing to give mine up!), but when I went to eBay today, I see the 'old' models selling for more than the new model will cost.

Does anyone have any insight as to why people would pay more, for the older technology? I'm rather stumped by this.

People on Ebay rarely keep up with the times, quite frankly.

It's from all the gas money spent to meet up in a teller line for safe and secure Kindle purchases.

You realize the new model only has Wi-Fi access, right?

Also keep in mind that Kindles before the K2i used Sprint as the 3G carrier. All Kindles from the K2i onward use AT&T. So if you're in an area that doesn't get good service from AT&T, then one of the older Sprint based models might be better for you.

I believe that the screen is smaller on the new model.

No, it's not. Both models, Wi-Fi only and Wi-Fi + 3G both have the same 6" screen as previous Kindle models. The size is smaller because the bezel is smaller than the K2.

Re: Kindle - why would the 'old' model be selling for so much?

Which model are you talking about? The kindle 1 or the kindle 2?

I can see some people, perhaps, spending more on the k1 just to get the sd card slot and the replaceable battery.

I can't see any reason to pay more for the k2 over the k3

Re: Kindle - why would the 'old' model be selling for so much?

I heard the new one has a smaller screen and only does wifi. You'd think Amazon would at least come out with 2 new versions and give people the choice.

Re: Kindle - why would the 'old' model be selling for so much?

I think I heard somewhere there were one or two new models, that the screen was the same size or larger, you could choose Wifi or 3G on the new models and the old models, some kind of nonsense about Beelzebub, Sprint and AT&T in a cage match, and the first model had a replaceable battery with dual rear hydraulic amphibulators.

I forget where I picked that stuff up though.

Sounds kinda fishy to me...

I just looked. There are two versions. One is black the other is white.

The old kindle was black and white, so you could read the letters.

Two new models, one is 3G and Wifi (comes in black or white versions), the cheaper one is wifi only and only comes in graphite. Screen size hasn't changed.

Look how much smaller that new screen is.

And it only has Wifi now too.

Sucks.
