How hard is it to replace a lawn tractor engine?

I have a Craftsman DYT 4000 lawn tractor with a 18.5 hp Briggs and Stratton engine that blew. I found a replacement engine online for $489 (cheaper than a new tractor). But I've never replaced one. What pitfalls should I look out for?

It's an over-sized lawn mower. How hard could it be? Dig in and have fun!

BTW, here's an entire tractor in NH for $600: http://www.sell.com/242CXZ

Harder than you might suspect.

Put it back on in the reverse order you take it off and you should be fine.

And make sure you throw out any pieces that are left over ... can't be too important if they didn't fit during re-assembly

That is my usual approach.

I was debating filling the fuel filter with gas to decrease cranking time during the first start. Having never started a new engine I'm not sure if I should. I've seen "Over Haulin'" and Chip Foose seems to do this (prime the engine). Is there any need to worry about air bubbles?

So far I've ripped everything apart, and I'm ready to install the new engine. It should be delivered next week sometime. As mentioned, I plan to simply install in reverse order of disassembly. I took pictures as I went.

I'll let you know how I make out.

They had tractors in like the 1800's or something. Can't be hard unless you're stupider than a guy that's been through Alzheimer's and dead for 50 years.

Well...I'm forgetful, and I've been married for 20 years.

If you were in Maryland, I'd sell you my Craftsman tractor with a 14HP Kohler for $500.

Re: How hard is it to replace a lawn tractor engine?

UPDATE:

As Pistol Pete stated it is an oversized lawnmower. If you should find yourself with a lawntractor with a blown engine do yourself a favor and save your pennies by replacing the engine. It was an easy job.

I did strip my 9/16" socket while fastening the 4 self-threading mounting bolts, but other than that it was a piece of cake.

Figured it would be. I've done enough work on mine that it looks like a pretty easy thing. Congrats.
