Hello? BAN TEXTING from CELL PHONES !!!

Enough is enough. For those of you with children under the driving age, pretty soon they'll be driving their new cars - inexperienced - and they will be texting their friends and not paying 100% attention to the road. Are you comfortable with that? Would anybody be?

The laws in place will NOT prevent people from texting on their cell phones and driving.

I think Texting is MORE dangerous than talking on a cell phone. Your eyes are literally off the road for a good 3.5 seconds sometimes, and that's enough time to die.

Ban them. Verizon...AT&T......Sprint.......Team Mobile, take heed. And right quick!

Correction: Your eyes are literally off the road for a good 3.5 seconds sometimes.

Kids these days can text without looking down, and it takes less time to read a text than to read a road sign. Ban road signs, they mean nothing with better cell phone GPS any way.

Well, I'm not opposed to this specific thing, but the real issue is one of "focus". And I don't mean with your eyes. I mean with being mentally focused on driving.

Recent studies have shown that driving with a blu-tooth is JUST as dangerous as holding the phone. Obviously more studies need to be done to determine why, but seems rather clear that anything that takes your mental focus off of driving is an issue.

Thank you for a sane, tempered response to a very serious crisis.

Cell phones are bad enough. Texting while driving is crazy. And now you can watch your favorite TV show on your phone - which people will likely do while driving. I'm convinced that these tech companies have a secret Darwin Department to keep the population in check.

If you can strike up some kind of deal where they will ban texting if you stop making threads then I'd be in full support.

Re: Hello? BAN TEXTING from CELL PHONES !!!

Why do you act like this is an issue that's coming up? There's plenty of inexperienced drivers out there right now texting their friends and not paying attention. There SHOULD be even MORE outrage !!!

I think there should be a section in Driver's Ed that teaches kids how to text and drive safely!

As opposed to being drunk, eating, reading, working on a laptop, applying makeup . . . .

I am not sure where you have been but distracted driving has been around for a long, long time. Cell phones and texting are just the latest easy target.

I'd like to take issue with this statement.

1) The studies show that two-way real-time verbal communication where one party is unaware of the the environmental dangers of the other party is what causes problems. This is true whether you are holding the phone, using a headset, or using a hands-free conferencing device. The lack of environmental cues leads the other party to make cognitive demands at inappropriate times.

2) Note that this only applies to real-time verbal communication. I have not seen anything comparing texting to verbal communication showing that they are equally distracting.

3) And it is a Bluetooth headset. Bluetooth is a wireless protocol implemented by many things including keyboards, mice, headsets, handsfree conferencing devices, and speakers. It is unrelated to Blu-Ray shiny plastic discs.
