Keep your kids away from the pool, for $&%# sake!

As father of 18 month old triplets, these stories make me stomach churn...

Here in Massachusetts, within a span of 2 weeks, two sets of twin girls drown in their families inground swimming pools.

1st set

2nd set

unreal

I think the standard question to ask is... where were the parents when the kids fell in the pool?

Obviously, parental supervision is required. However, ESPECIALLY if you have a swimming pool, kids aged 2.5 and 4 should be able to swim.

I heard this on the news this morning briefly, and I thought it was an update of the first one, then I'm listening and realize it's a new damn story.

An accident is waiting to happen with my neighbor. Too many kids in the pool from ages 3-10, jumping off the patio into the pool, dangling off the patio rail that is 10-12' above concrete floor while the adults are indoor.

That's a nice looking house in the first story.

And this story reminds me of some friends of the family we had while growing up. They had Scottish Terriers who loved to jump into their inground pool, swim to the ladder and climb out. All was well until they cleaned the pool, took out the ladder, and didn't put it back. The next day one of the dogs was at the bottom of the pool.

Re: Keep your kids away from the pool, for $&%# sake!

A friend of ours has been extra careful of his three children in the pool. If they were in the enclosure with the pool, an adult was watching them. Not just present, but watching.

And, none of them have ever come anywhere near drowning.

It's just a matter of taking good care of what's important to you.

Being the cynical beast I am, I suspect foul play in both of these.

TGM, you've got a fence around your pool, right?

Re: Keep your kids away from the pool, for $&%# sake!

It's really not about the pool in these stories though. What in the hell are 18 month old, and 2 1/2 year old twins doing outside unsupervised?

My kids are part fish, but I still wouldn't want to own my own pool for this very reason even though they are good swimmers.

Here's my daughter (just turned 4 two weeks ago) from this Saturday:

Redundancy. You can lose one and still have twins.

Go ahead and get out of the pool, Dr. Mabuse, as I believe you have been fished in.

You know... it's like doubly hilarious when someone fails, while thinking themselves in on the joke and clever.

I don't see the problem, I just dropped the kids off at the pool 20 minutes ago.

Even more hilarious when you make either a fake quote, or fail to properly link your supposed evidence.

Re: Keep your kids away from the pool, for $&%# sake!

Sadly this seems to happen in Phoenix on a daily basis. I have a 4 yr old and got him swimming lessons as soon as i could.

3 weeks ago a 3 yr old drown out here and the family was outside and some in the pool with her. Sad they weren't paying attention

Re: Keep your kids away from the pool, for $&%# sake!

My co-worker's 2 year old nephew got into the pool by himself during a BBQ this summer and very nearly drowned. He's still in the hospital, recovering slowly.

It was drummed into my head from very early on that I was not allowed to get into the pool unsupervised.

You obviously had parents with common sense which apparently is a rare commodity these days.

Re: Keep your kids away from the pool, for $&%# sake!

I almost drowned when I was 3, perhaps my earliest memory.

At a public pool, wasn't allowed in by myself, mom would go in with me at times, teaching me to swim I guess. I convinced her to let me sit on the side and dangle my feet in the water while she sat just a few feet behind me. I remember carefully watching her and waiting for her to turn her head, and then leaping into the pool. Sank and had to be fished out; strong visual memory of sitting in the chair wrapped in a blanket, peaking out at all the pool-goers staring at me.

The allure of a pool is quite strong for young kids. If I ever have them they're learning to swim super early.
