I am now a high school graduate!

Ever have one of those things that you put off repeatedly, always telling yourself that you'll get it done someday, and never got around to it? Well graduating high school was one of mine.

I dropped out early because I didn't plan on going to college right away, and then eventually attended community college and later, a 4-year university. My degrees were awarded on a conditional basis because my academic standing was so high, and they said that they would eventually lift it as soon as I got my GED. My counselors thought it was funny that I was going to graduate cum laude, but still didn't have my high school diploma.

Well after finally enrolling in a local GED program and taking a series of exams (which i consider far below the level of what a high school graduate should have been able to complete) , I am now a high school graduate!

Re: I am now a high school graduate!

Not trying to spoil your big moment, but....what kind of a reason is that to drop out in the first place?
Secondly, why didn't you get your GED after you, I guess, took a break before going to college?
Finally, isn't a GED/high school diploma required to attend any institution of higher learning? (Apparently not)

Shit. I wish I knew that before I wasted all those years in high school.

Hate to burst your bubble but you aren't a high school graduate. You are a high school graduate equivalent.

Doesn't seem possible to get accepted to a college, any college, let alone a "real" 4 year college without a high school diploma. I guess it can be done though.

Re: I am now a high school graduate!

Why bother?

I have a friend who dropped out of high school, skipped the bachelor's, and got a master's degree. Granted, he was fortunate to find a program what would award him a MS without a BS. But he's never had the urge to get a GED.

Yup, many higher-education programs don't require a high school diploma. Even when I was applying to 4-year colleges, they didn't care that I didn't have my GED until it came time to graduate. GE courses I completed at a CC were more than enough to qualify me for entry. And most CCs don't care who you are.

I didn't really have a goal or plan by my senior year in high school, and I figured that instead of wasting time and money just going on an aimless path, that I might as well take a load off and just wrap up high school a year early. That and I went through an unbelievable amount of stress during adolescence. I was also a year younger than all my classmates because I skipped a grade; I turned 16 my senior year.

And as for why I didn't get it right away... I just kept putting it off. I didn't need it to enter a CC; I was planning on getting my GED by that time, but I ended up putting it off again once I got accepted to a 4-year university. I was so busy working on my degree that I didn't have time to go back and get it done. I guess some things just fall by the wayside.
