Do you wear a helmet when you ride a bicycle?

Well, a girl i know told me that she doesn't look cute when wearing a helmet and riding a bicycle. I told her it's better to wear a helmet than be dead. She said she'd rather not wear a helmet and be cute even when dead. I told her that if she wasn't wearing a helmet and her brains were splattered over the ground then it wouldn't be cute.

Anyhoo, that leads me to my question to you guys - do you wear a helmet when you ride a bike?

In response to the question, I've never worn a helmet while riding a bicycle. But if I was a serious rider, I'd consider it.

Always, but then I only ride for dozens of miles at a time and on the trails. You can get up to 20 mph or more on even small slopes and I'd hate to think about going over the handlebars at that speed without one.

If she's doing circles in the driveway, she probably doesn't need one.

Before I weigh in, can I see a picture? Is she merely cute, or is she hot? And if she just hot, or is she HOT HOT HOT!?

Sometimes. I wear my helmet when I'm on a road bike doing longer rides that I'll be going over 25 mph on, but when I'm just doing 10 miles on flat ground and using a city bike then it varies.

Nah, I only ride on some normal streets and small bike paths. No helmet. I'm not a pussy. If I was doing some crazier mountain trails or long distance, then I probably would.

Re: Do you wear a helmet when you ride a bicycle?

I make my 4 and 2 year olds wear one when I'm hauling them behind in the bike trailer so I wear one too to not be a hypocrite.

I never did as a kid though, biking the wrong way down heavy traffic in the city. Times were a tad different then I guess.

Pretty much everywhere I ride is back roads, so I don't wear one. If I was on major streets or huge hills or trails or whatever, then I would.

Back when I rode motorcycles I always did... even before there were helmet laws. Just seemed to be the common sense thing to do.

On my bicycle, no. I rarely go very far, ride in traffic, or go off road. It's generally to a friend's house or the bar a few blocks down. On my motorcycle, every time.

No, don't even own one. But, pretty much only ride on side streets and sidewalks, never in heavy traffic. (Yes, sidewalk bicycling is allowed here in Japan - and everybody rides on the sidewalks, when walking you always have to be on the lookout for bicycles coming up behind you, it's ridiculous.)

Re: Do you wear a helmet when you ride a bicycle?

I always wear a helmet and like the poster said above, my son has always worn one and I'm not a hypocrite. He knows not to get on a bike w/o his, even though I'm sure he takes some grief for it. My buddy never wore one and he was found on the side of the road one day when he went out for a ride. Nobody is sure what happened to him. He spent six months in the hospital and was missing part of his skull. His head looked like somebody caved it in with a baseball bat. Think dented in like play doh. He had to learn to talk again and has a big plate in his skull. So yea, we wear helmets in our household. And for the record, I think women who wear helmets and they have their ponytail sticking out is very cute.

Re: Do you wear a helmet when you ride a bicycle?

When I used to ride my mountain bike, I always wore a helmet.

Good thing too, one day while training for a race, I lost grip, slid on a dirt trail and hit a tree head first. Cracked the helmet but I was ok.

Yep, it only takes that ONE time that you hit a pothole you couldn't make out, or something rolls into your path, or you get bumped by a passing car, or slip on the loose gravel to make all the folks saying, "I only ride near the house and not in lots of traffic", etc., realize that the entire point of a helmet is to protect them against that one small chance of something happening. Do these people only wear their seatbelts when on the Interstate?

Taking a header over your handlebars even at low speed into the pavement of a city street is not going to leave you feeling too good.

Re: Do you wear a helmet when you ride a bicycle?

I've never owned a bicycle helmet, though I used to push them on my customers when I ran a bike shop almost 20 years ago. Back then I even commuted by bike.

I just bought a pair of bikes for my wife and I, and I assure you we will be wearing the brain buckets I buy for us this weekend whenever we ride.

So, in my case, older does mean wiser.

So many answers to this:
Smart people?
People more concerned with their safety, health, and life than whether they get "helmet hair?"
Parents who realize that their injury or death from the irresponsible stupidity of not wearing one will leave their families with an undue burden?
People who believe their brains are in their heads instead of their asses or penises?

A motorcycle "maybe." Hey, man, that's awesome.

Re: Do you wear a helmet when you ride a bicycle?

LOL I ride at like 10 mph on a bike, I think i'll be fine. And definitely on a motorcycle, yaay for taking something out of context.

You know damn well I meant "on a motorcycle it would make sense to wear one"

Maybe it does make sense on a bicycle, but I have never worn one and I'm still here, despite some nasty spills.
