I have gout! EEEK!

I seem to get a lot of Old Man diseases. Had a cataract, now gout. Well, I talked to my Dr. and he asked about recent diet change. Been losing weight and eating a lot of broccoli. Pretty much with every meal for several months. He also mentioned that the Diet Coke and rum could also be a factor. I agreed to give up broccoli. Anyone else ever have this? Quite painful, but not much headache to get rid of.

Re: I have gout! EEEK!

Brocolli? Weird. I was told it was booze and red meat that contributed to my gout.

Take this stuff:

Not necessarily the brand pictured, but Quercetin with Activated Bromelain - it keeps a spring in my step. Black cherry extract also works for me.

Reminds me of when Bobby Hill was sneaking to the mall for some tasty chicken liver from a "NY" deli and got gout. Do you see what happens when you go all 'big city' and start eating thing like broccoli? Do you see what happens?

Re: I have gout! EEEK!

The saddest part is, I posted that on my birthday at 9PM, and December 8, 2007 was a Saturday.

2007 was a bad year. I'm sorry I took out my disappointment on all of you. I hope all your gouts are better and less gouty.

Yes, I have had a few bouts, always in the spring. The obvious advice is to give up red meats, booze, fats, etc. Veggies are generally good, but there are a few high in purine which are bad if you get gout. Asparagus is one, and apparently my downfall.

My wife hates it but I love it. So I would buy a big bunch and eat it for many nights in a row in the spring. Then get gout. I hate fucking asparagus. If it is served when I eat out, I will eat it, but I don't buy it anymore, and haven't had an attack in a couple of years.

Groucho's cartoon is a pretty accurate description of a mild case.

Re: I have gout! EEEK!

I'm not really familiar with gout, but if booze and red meat brought it on, I'd probably have it by now.

And I'd probably do my best to drink the pain away, as well.

Not necessarily the cause of it, but if your body can't handle uric acid, then red meat and booze will bring it on. It basically brings on arthritis and eventually can cause kidney failure and stones. If your body can process uric acid normally, then you're fine. I also find that a lot of salt or MSG will bring it on, for me, at least.

There are different medications for acute attacks and for preventative medicine, colchicine is good for acute attacks but basically will have you in the bathroom for the duration.

Re: I have gout! EEEK!

Gout sucks. Prevents me from drinking my favorite beer ever (Sam Adams Summer), also keeps me from eating oatmeal (which is no great loss). Worst part for me is that it affects my knee, not my toes. Painful mutherfucking disease.

Yes, it is a word. I was going to mention it too. It is a pill, an "old time" remedy for gout. It is poisonous so if you are given a prescription, be careful about the dose. It really helps reduce the inflamation. It is most effective if started when you first feel a bout of gout coming on. My doctor gave me an "as needed" prescription so I could self-manage without making an appointment to see him. But first he gave me literature and a good talking to about the poisonous nature of the plant it is an extract from. However, I found about half the dose he said I could take is VERY effective.

You should listen to your own doc of course. However, my doc says that is the first sign your dose is too high and you should reduce it.

Re: I have gout! EEEK!

AAAAAARRRRRRGGHHHHHH!

THIS FUCKING HURTS SO DAMN MUCH!!!!

The medicine hasn't worked yet, and is suppose to take a day or two, but this hurts so damn bad. It is second only to frostbite on your scrotum. It is very similar in that the paid never lets up. You cannot keep yourself busy so that you don't notice the pain. The pain is all that you can think about. OUCHIE!
