Re: I have gout! EEEK!
Man, this fucking disease is like being cursed. Unfortunately, I apparently have the progressive form of gout that just gets worse and worse. I had an attack last year that lasted almost a month. I fought it hard and managed to keep the attacks at bay with a daily regime of cherry pills, celery, uric acid cleanse pills, turmeric, vitamin c and allopurinol. Then last week, I went to an Asian buffet and limping the next day from a red swollen toe. So weird. I always thought my bad eating would one day give me a heart attack, not foot pain. I guess the only option for me now is to go full vegan which sucks for a meat loving guy from Texas. I'll never be able to enjoy a cheeseburger or steak again. The pain isn't worth it.
If I remember correctly, the main benefit of veganism on gout is the addition of vegetables rather than due to the elimination of meat. So I'd say maybe start by upping your veggie intake, then try the vegan thing, but don't necessarily think of it as permanent. Test it out for a while and if it seems like it's working try a reasonable portion of meat and see how that goes.
I say that, but I'm kind of a wimp with pain. Once I connected pain to a particular food, I'd be done with it, too.

Re: I have gout! EEEK!
I'm a ravening omnivore, so plenty of vegetables. My gout flareups would occur after a huge steak, a sushi pigout, or too many beers in a weekend (is there such thing as too many beers?). I talked to my GP about it and he said moderation is key, but that he takes a daily allopurinol so he can still eat and drink what he wants. He put me on it and I'm good to go for over 5 years now.
Mmmm, sushi.

I thought I was getting it on my big toe - it always felt like I just needed to "crack" it but with intermittent fasting and keto - it's pretty much gone now. The ironic part is that if you're on a keto diet - some of the side effects can be gout. A nice lemon water or ACV takes care of it/prevents it.

I'm surprised I never posted in this thread since I usually toss my 2-cents in every gout topic.
I used to have gout attacks that crippled me. Once had to have a friend take me to urgent care (and get me a wheelchair!). But I started taking antioxidants and have not had a gout attack in 20 years.

I get gout in my knees. Feels like my kneecap is on fire and I can't bend or put weight on my leg for 7-10 days when it flairs up. I am just getting over it in my left knee.

I also see cherry pills being mentioned.
Gout runs in my family so I'm scared.
So many Gouties in this thread.

Yeah I've seen that video before. That's an advanced case that has caused deformity. I've seen them squeeze the gunk out like paste too. Pretty crazy. Another thing that is frightening is that this crap can lead to kidney stones which is one experience in life that I never want to go through after hearing all the horror stories. I guess if there is a silver lining, it's finally forced me to give up eating processed food crap. I use to eat breakfast cereal in the morning. Now I do plain avocados. I'm going to give veggie burgers a try too.

Yep! I take it immediately upon the onset of symptoms. I make sure to always have some on hand. Fortunately, I haven't had a recurrence in several years. It felt like someone took a hammer to my big toe. Lots of achy-throbbing pain, even at rest. Must sleep with foot above covers and even just sheet. Nothing can make contact with the area or else!
I got it bad when I was on a 3 week business trip in Germany...by myself. Had to drive and do a fair amount of walking. Came back to the hotel and iced it each evening to try and get the swelling down. Worst trip ever!!

I know, right?
Want a steak? Eat a steak. Want a beer? Drink a beer. All you can eat sushi special? Don't mind if I do! All without having to worry if that pinch in the big toe is the start of a flare-up.
