I haven't been there for twelve years. But I recall all of the touristy things being close together.

I haven't been there in 20 years, but there were 2 main subways (N/S and E/W) that cross in the middle of downtown (actually, I think they're called the "el" there). Just don't go too far up in numbered streets. The historical stuff is in the low numbers (5th St., etc.). I think it's pretty easy to get around there, at least in Center City.

there is Septa, Southeaster Pennsylvania Transportation Authority.
INcludes buses subways and the El (elevated train system like in Chicago).

Center City also has some tourist buses that run and there might even be some free tour buses.

Re: How to get around Philly w/o a car?

If you like museums, the Art Museum, the Barnes, and the Mutter are cool.

If you like to go out there's a lot of neat bars in Fishtown and NoLibs. Check something like R5Productions to see what bands are playing while you're in town.

South Street is worth a visit. Old City and Center City have some nice restaurants. Morimoto may have a special dinner.

Do not be one of the assholes that supports the stupid fucking duck tours.

You may also be able to do Philly Car Share. It's like zipcar.

You mean first on the list isn't running up the Philadelphia Art Museum's steps like Rocky? You should have your DVDTalk forum membership revoked.

And cheesesteaks. Every meal.

And don't say "Philly."

Don't listen to this man. Anything that pisses Philadelphians off is a mitzvah.

Watch out for the west part of town; a lot of local guys are often up to no good and try to make trouble in the neighborhoods.

There are jars of preserved human kidneys and livers, and a man's skull so eaten away by tertiary syphilis that it looks like pounded rock. There are dried severed hands shiny as lacquered wood, showing their veins like leaves; a distended ovary larger than a soccer ball; spines and leg bones so twisted by rickets they're painful just to see; the skeleton of a dwarf who stood 3 feet 6 inches (1.07 m) small, next to that of a giant who towered seven and a half feet. And "Jim and Joe," the green-tinted corpse of a two-headed baby, sleeping in a bath of formaldehyde.
And that's just the Gretchen Worden Room!

Re: How to get around Philly w/o a car?

I think the Mutter Museum is weak.
There's a few interesting things in there but for the price and the other stuff it isn't very much.

I'm not sure what Boba means by the West but actually North Philly is pretty dangerous, stay out.

Re: How to get around Philly w/o a car?

regular cool is Philly Cool!

Most things of interest can be walked to in Center City. If you want to venture out, I'd suggest the regional rail system. It costs more than the bus or subway but is a cleaner, quieter and generally faster way to get around town.

Re: How to get around Philly w/o a car?

All the historical stuff is all right in a small area, you can totally walk to all of that. The Franklin Insitute is supposed to be really good. Some of the attractions, like Independance Hall, require tickets. They are free tickets, but they are timed as they only allow so many people in at one time. So make sure if you are doing that you get your tickets early so you can get the time slot you want.

and don't do Gino's or Pat's if you go for Cheesesteaks. Too crowded, and you can do better. Tony Luke's is good, but you can probably find even better than that.

Re: How to get around Philly w/o a car?

I second that! Pat's & Geno's are seriously overrated. Try Chubby's or delassandros in Roxborough if you get the chance and don't forget to get the sweets!

Re: How to get around Philly w/o a car?

Delasandros was sold about 2 or 3 years ago so not original owners.
Pats and Genos are fine they just get bad mouthed by people because it's trendy to bad mouth them.
