A) It's because it supposedly meant "doesn't go".

B) But it's not true.

Statistically speaking, 1 of every 200 New Zealanders was an extra in Lord of the Rings.

I've never seen a supernova, but if it's anything like my old Chevy Nova, it'll light up the night sky!

On a similar note, the Ford Pinto had trouble in Brazil because pinto is Brazilian slang for penis.

Re: The Did You Know Thread.

If you have a screw that's pulled out of a cabinet, a door or any wooden surface and you need it to go back into the stripped-out hole, take a toothpick and some super glue, paste the toothpick in the hole and break it off. When you try installing the screw afterwards, it will grind against the toothpick, tighten up and hold.

Fact: Spam sushi is popular in Hawaii.

Spam musubi is a very popular snack and lunch food in Hawaii made in the tradition of Japanese onigiri, also known as a musubi. Spam musubi is composed of a block of rice with a slice of grilled spam on top and nori (seaweed) wrapping to hold it together.

Chris Miller, the writer of Animal House, received his nickname "Pinto" due to an unfortunate swimming accident that resulted in the tip of his penis being covered in tar and getting permanently stained black.

Re: The Did You Know Thread.

The classic film noir He Walked by Night was based upon serial killer Erwin "Machine Gun" Walker. During filming, supporting actor Jack Webb struck up a friendship with LAPD consultant Marty Wynn, which inspired him to create Dragnet. Webb encouraged LAPD officers to submit their own experiences as potential plot-lines. One officer who took him up on the offer was Gene Roddenberry. Encouraged by Webb, Roddenberry went into television and eventually created Star Trek. Decades later, Star Trek actress Jeri Ryan went through a nasty divorce with her husband Jack. When Jack ran for the Senate, the contents of their divorce filings leaked to the press, including the details of Jack's perverse sexual proclivities. With Ryan's political career ruined and the Republicans unable to field a decent replacement, Barack Obama easily won the Senate seat and gained national prominence when he appeared at the 2004 Democratic National Convention.

Therefore, Barack Obama owes his Presidency to a serial killer.

Looks like the electrical tape might interfere with any potential tastiness.

(I can't be the only one who thought that at first glance.)

Re: The Did You Know Thread.

The Russell's Viper is the venomous snake that causes the most human deaths on earth. The man who the snake is named after, Russell, described the snake as 'the most irritable reptile he had ever come across'. That description has stuck to this day.

1 in 5(tad over 1 in 5 actually) American adults has genital herpes. A little less than 1 in 10 know they have it, even though they are both infected and it is communicable. This is why it's such an epidemic, the largest majority of people who have it(because they thought condoms prevented the spread) think they don't have any STD. They could pass a lie detector and thus they continue to spread herpes around.

Re: The Did You Know Thread.

1 in 5 people don't know how statistics about what people don't know are derived.

(I want to know how they know that 1 in 10 Americans has diabetes, but doesn't know it. If they don't know, how does the AMA know?)

You can make up something that is patently made up, and people will believe it, especially if it supports their preconceptions. For instance, 50,000 pedophiles are stalking children on the internet right now! See! The internet is a dangerous place!

True.

Especially when said statistics come from CDC studies, apparently.

I would've thought 4 in 5 is more likely. The average person might've heard the terms sample size, confidence level, confidence interval, but really have no clue what they mean.
