So I got a call from a Hollywood actor today...

Just something I thought I'd share. I'll try to make the story brief as possible, to keep the necessity for bolding to a minimum.

My grandmother, who passed away in 2004, went to school in Illinois with actor Bill Phipps before he went to Hollywood to chase his dream, after a few years at Eastern Ilinois University. You can click on his name in the previous sentence to see his career, if you don't recognize his name.

Anyway, last year I was going through some of Grandma's things, and found some photos and other memorabilia from her friendship with Bill. I even found his address in her phone book. They stayed in touch every so often over the years until she passed, and I remember her talking about him when I was younger. Based on his extensive career, and on my "connection" to him through Grandma, I decided to make a Facebook fan page for him, and also contact him to just say hi and tell him about Grandma's passing. I also told him briefly about the fan page, and included my phone number in case he preferred to call instead of write. He wrote me a brief note back and sent a couple signed photos, as well as signing and returning the DVD cover I sent him of his 1951 movie, "Five". He didn't really acknowledge the fan page, but confirmed his friendship with Grandma, and he asked how things were in the old hometown.

Fast forward to a couple months ago: I printed up and sent him a makeshift birthday card with the names of everyone belonging to the fan page (67 members at the time, 80 as of this writing). A couple weeks later, a newly-joined member posted on the fan page and said she was sitting at a Starbucks with Bill himself, and she was showing him the fan page. It was also apparently his first time on the internet ever! She said he loved it, he thanked everyone for the birthday greetings, and he would be writing to me soon. Within the next couple weeks, I had a six page letter from Bill, along with several photocopied pieces of additional memorabilia, including a copy of his honorary doctorate he received from EIU in 2006. In his letter he said I was welcome to anything he had, to use for the fan page! He finished by saying he was looking forward to hearing from me again.

Well, I've been trying to find the time to sit down and type something out to him, to answer all the questions he had for me, and to ask him some additional things about himself, things that I and a couple other people at the fan page have asked about, but I just haven't gotten to it. I've felt bad about it, and, well, the guy is 88 now. I figure I'd better get to it soon, you know what I mean?

Anyway, tonight I get home from work, and I have a message on my voice mail, and the caller ID says UNKNOWN. Hmmm. I play the message and an unfamiliar voice says my name, then says, "Bill Phipps here." WHOA!!! He leaves a brief message that he was making sure everything was okay, since he hasn't heard back from me, and he leaves me his phone number! Awesome!

I know there's people who post here who work in the business, and come in contact or rub elbows with stars, or maybe even know them personally. I'm just a schmoe from BFE who doesn't know anyone, and I just thought it was cool that someone who had a career like Bill, and who worked with a bunch of the greats in the business, took the time to call and say hi.

That is awesome. I was unaware of him until you posted his IMDB link. I googled and learned a lot.

Thanks for that.

Yep. That's Bill as Wash Perry, from WOTW. He was one of the three guys who got killed by the aliens first.

Bill's on the right.

That shot of him you posted is actually one of the profile pictures I use in rotation on the fan page.

I love how Bill Phipps understands Facebook, but Mrs. Danger does not.

That is really cool! He's a legend from the golden days of Hollywood. They always have the greatest stories... Wow, he's been on all the big classic TV shows: Bonanza, Twilight Zone, Charlie's Angels, Gunsmoke, Lassie... geeze, it would be easier to list which shows he *wasn't* on.

It's nice to see that he knows his work is appreciated because of your fanpage.

I was thinking the exact same thing when I saw the list of shows he was on. That's a pretty amazing list of A-shows.

It's nice that he's lived long enough to see that some fans still appreciate him.

Cool story, Infidel. That's pretty awesome that he has been so forthcoming in providing things to you for a fan page.

Edit: TomOpus: not a douche.

Speaking voice only. His singing was provided by future talk show host Mike Douglas. Bit of trivia for ya there.

KillerCannibal...word of advice, you may want to quote the joker in question. I have a feeling once a mod cleans up this clown's posts (deletes), then your remark is going to be directed at Tom Opus.

I haven't talked to Bill yet, but there's already a couple stories at the fan page, due to an article I found online about a Bill Phipps film festival they did at EIU about the time he got his honorary doctorate. I like his story about how the flip of a coin can decide if you perform with Charles Laughton, or wind up on Gilligan's Island.

You know, I realized that after I figured his posts would be removed. I'll make a special note.

Well, I've managed to collect four new members to the fan page in the last 24 hours. Not too bad.

EDIT: Make that five!
EDIT: Six! You guys are awesome!
EDIT: Seven! Do I hear eight?
