The 2010 haircut cost/tipping thread

Yes, I know there was a thread on this in 2006. That was 3 1/2 years ago so I'm making a new one.

Just got my haircut today at the same place I almost always go, one of those barber shops that has been there forever but is now mostly staffed with women now that most of the old male barbers have retired or died. A men's haircut for men who do not have long hair is $14.

If I get a good haircut there, which is almost always, I tip $5. $5 on a $14 haircut, to me, seems like a pretty decent tip. But I've noticed, or perceived anyway, the last couple of times that when I give the barber the $20 and only take $1 back of the change that the "thanks" they offer seems pretty restrained...unenthusiastic.

It could just be that I'm an asshole, but if that were it, I would think their "thanks" would be more enthusiastic in that I am on my way out the door when I tip.

So what do you pay and tip on your haircuts?

Re: The 2010 haircut cost/tipping thread

My haircuts also cost $14. I just always give a $20 and tell them to keep the change.
Seeing as it only takes them about 12 minutes to cut my hair, I figure that is a good enough tip.

it takes less that 10 min to do my haircut... i usually just give 2 bucks. oh yeah.. they charge 13 bucks. which i think is 5 too much for the type of haircut i'm getting.

$13. I tip $2 or $3 depending on how I feel.

These type of threads always lead me to think that I should have been a barber.

Re: The 2010 haircut cost/tipping thread

$5 is generous to me. I usually pay $2 for a $12 barber cut if it turns out OK and $3 if they are cordial and do a nice job. When I've gone to a stylist, I pay roughly 15% of the cut. I've been thinking too that they might feel I'm too cheap. Oh well.

I think the size of the tip should depend on the quality of "Junk rub to the arm, hand, and/or shoulder" you get from your Hair Cutter.

I shave my own head so my hair cutter tips skilz are rusty....

Re: The 2010 haircut cost/tipping thread

i pay $22 for the haircut and give him $30 total. while i didn't ever cut hair, i worked for tips at one point in my life, so i tend to tip better than most. plus, the guy is cool, has his own shop, so i know his overhead is much higher since he has to pay for the place himself.

$22? Is this before or after your manicure?

Mine cost $13, and I tip $2-$3.

My Mom used to say that she would tip based on whether or not the guy cutting her hair would shut up or not

This thread makes me think of the 30 Rock where Liz is coming up with reasons to get rid of Dennis. The way she says "He cuts his own hair" makes me crack up every time I see it.

My haircut costs $14, I just give him a $20. He used to run the shop with his dad, who died last year, so I kinda feel bad for him.

Re: The 2010 haircut cost/tipping thread

I go to a salon and pay... $30 or $32 a cut depending on who is doing the neck massage and cutting. They do all kinds of 'Aveda Lifestyle' crap there, stuff with rocks, feet, hands, all kinds of aromatherapy crap. But they do better cuts and that's why I go there.

I usually pay $45 with no change.

$35, usually tip $5 for the cut and $5 for the touch up after 3 weeks.

Haha, just got a haircut yesterday and there was a pronounced "junk rub" thing going on. She still only got $5 on a $15 haircut.

as a guy who used to get his hair cut at shitty places like supercuts, i enjoy going to someone who knows how to cut my hair when i walk in and i don't have to explain it seventy times on what i'm looking for. plus, the quality is consistent, which you can't say for those shit bag chain places. this is about the only thing i spend more money on than i should, though.

So it's more of a Cheers type place than a place where it's different people all the time and don't know you from the next guy?

Re: The 2010 haircut cost/tipping thread

^All guys really need is a good barber. I've read of some hairstylists--who charge their clients upwards of $200 for a haircut--go to a barber for their own cut.

That's what I do too. They charge $13 and leave a $2 tip.

I have been going to the same barbershop for over 15 years. And even though I have moved city, I come back to get my haircut every two/three weeks.

You didn't get a "Junk rub". You got a "Muff Rub". MR's are an automatic Big tip if she's cute.

I've only ever had Men cut my hair and now I shave my own head. I've never had a chick "MR" me while getting a hair cut.

no. it's a guy who rents a small 1 person studio in one of those beauty malls. he's his own boss since he's the only person that works there. i always know he'll be there, since he's the only one there. when i used to go to supercuts, i'd go about ever 4 - 5 weeks, and i'd see completely new faces ever time i go.
