Family mourns wife, mother killed in plunge off Buckman Bridge
Other driver in crash faces DUI manslaughter charge; 4th wreck in 2 years.
By Kevin Turner Story updated at 2:38 AM on Monday, Mar. 1, 2010

When Luma Kajy moved to Jacksonville from Michigan 12 years ago with her new husband, Paul, she was amazed by how many bridges there were in their new home, he said.

Shortly before 10 p.m. Saturday night, Luma Kajy was killed on one of them — the Buckman — after a car slammed into her SUV near the apex of the bridge. Kajy’s SUV plunged 100 feet before sinking into the St. Johns River, where it was recovered about five hours later.

Police said the driver of the second vehicle, Sasha Nicole Pringle, left the scene but was followed by a witness to an apartment complex on Sunbeam Road. Pringle, 31, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and DUI manslaughter, according to Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office booking documents. The accident was Pringle’s fourth since November 2008, and the second in which she was charged with leaving the scene.

Kajy’s family, including her sons, Benjamin, 10, and Luke, 8, was left to mourn a wife and mother Sunday.

“She was the best. She went to church twice, maybe three times a week,” said Paul Kajy, fighting back tears as he spoke briefly to the Times-Union on Sunday. “She took care of the kids, she took care of me. She’d do anything in the world for anybody.”

Kajy, a 41-year-old independent Realtor, was southbound on Interstate 295, headed toward her Fruit Cove home when a 2002 Honda the Florida Highway Patrol said was driven by Pringle hit her 2003 GMC SUV. Kajy lost control of her SUV near the top of the Buckman Bridge, the report said, then the vehicle overturned and flipped over the bridge’s 3-foot-high retaining wall.

Rescuers pulled Kajy’s SUV from the river at 3:10 a.m. Sunday. Divers located the vehicle under 45 feet of water about 1:20 a.m. after an exhaustive search, according to a Highway Patrol report.

Two boats from the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department and a Navy boat began searching the waters about 10 p.m., fire spokesman John Bracey said.

Court records show Pringle, of Jacksonville, was also charged on Oct. 5 with leaving the scene of an accident, as well as careless driving. Pringle pleaded no contest, records show, and paid fines and court fees.

On Aug. 21, she was charged with failure to yield to another vehicle, resulting in a crash. She pleaded no contest and adjudication was withheld, according to records.

And in a Nov. 4, 2008, incident, in which an officer reported Pringle was tailgating, she was charged with causing an accident that did $11,000 worth of damage and injured the other driver. She pleaded guilty to careless driving and paid fees and court costs.

State Attorney Angela Corey said on Sunday that despite Pringle’s previous traffic accidents, she hadn’t been faced with any criminal charges until the Oct. 5 accident, which brought the leaving the scene of an accident with property damage charge. The others were civil charges.

Corey said unless there had been a statutory trigger for revocation or suspension of Pringle's driver’s license, such as exceeding maximum points on a license or a DUI offense, a prosecutor couldn’t ask for such an action in sentencing.

Pringle’s sister-in-law, Amber Rodriguez, said she’s known her since elementary school and described her as a young artist who could never get the support she needed to succeed.

In posts on Jacksonville.com, Rodriguez defended Pringle in response to comments by other participants.

“She’s a good woman but has problems just like the rest of us,” she wrote in one post. “She and my brother had been in a fight and she had just packed up her things to go to her mom’s. I’m not saying what she did wasn’t wrong but I am saying that everyone makes mistakes.”

Pringle was not wearing a seat belt, but Kajy was, the Highway Patrol reported.

Paul Kajy said he had his doubts about the 3-foot-high walls on the sides of the bridge, and whether they are sufficient to safeguard thousands of motorists who use the span daily.

“That Buckman — is it safe?” he asked Sunday.

Horrible way to go.

Re: Drunk driver knocks car off bridge

Shitty way to go, but I'm liking this trend of civilians following criminals around -- second time in a week someone has done that in Jax and gotten them arrested (the first time was last Monday when some guy killed a McDonalds employee in one of the better parts of the city while trying to rob the manager of her bank deposit bag. A witness followed the shooter for 13 miles and called the police.)

Oh and the lady that was arrested in this story -- the first thing she asked the judge was how long until she could drive again, what a fucking dumbass.

Re: Drunk driver knocks car off bridge

People panic and it costs them their lives when their vehicle goes in the water.

Lots of people found in vehicles were drowned simply because they never thought to remove their seat belt. Like this woman they are found still buckled in. In a wild, rabbit-like panic they struggle against their own seat belt to 'get away'. Some are found with the window open where they tried to go out the window never once thinking of unlatching the seat belt, and drown in the process.

Too many people in bridge and river country don't even carry a window break/seat belt cutting tool in their vehicles. They cost like $9 bucks from companies like 'Life Hammer', and you can simply mount it on the dash, in the armrest box, glove box, etc. You can have your seat belt off and the window broken in 5-10 seconds flat. Not even one thought about being prepared for the unexpected or a crisis is the norm in the US.

Yeah it's those guard rails that need to 'protect the people', not people being just a little bit prepared.

Too bad our jails are so full of people who had a joint, or a gram of cola, and nonsense like that. They should be filled with people getting severe penalties for actually endangering/ending the lives of the public via DUI. You know... real criminals who could and do actually hurt people.

But in this case, the car plunged 100 feet before striking the water. The question is, was she even conscious after the car impacted the water? If she was knocked unconscious, there's no struggle in this case.

Which begs the question, how far of a plunge can the body withstand?

Luma Kajy moved to Jacksonville, FL from Michigan 12 years ago
Florida huh? Well that was her first mistake.

I'm surprised that a bridge with a 100 foot height would have only a three foot tall barier. That seems like it would be too easy to fly over in an accident.

Florida is pretty shitty, but it's a definite improvement over Michigan.

There's a large amount of data on this stuff. Most people simply panic and drown.

This is true for going off a high bridge, like the collapsed bridge over the Mississippi for instance, the I-40 disaster in Oklahoma, and when people just go rolling off into a canal, lake, or arroyo with no impact at all. They freak out and drown. The impact of the 'daddy government will protect/save me, it's not my job' mindset is far reaching. Many, if not most people just give no thought at all to being prepared for a crisis any more. Well... and the largest majority of people are really, really stupid.

Like here in this example, where the first instinct is to call 911, literally while under water she's dialing the phone. "Daddy government come save me! It's not my job!" Most likely she would have sat there and died without a person taking action to save her. The correspondent panics and would have drowned even though she knows what's coming in one example.

This show, like AAA, fire departments, police departments, etc, recommends a Life Hammer. Amazon has them for like $10-$15 and similar tools are carried at Walmart and all manner of stores. Every car in a bridge and river state should have one on the dash or door, very few do. There are many 'sinking car' safety videos like this on Youtube and Google Video and the like.

The SUV would be going about 55 mph when it hit the water. I wouldn't be surprised if the impact killed her.

Re: Drunk driver knocks car off bridge

Stories like this are why I support laws that consider alcohol as an aggravating factor, not a mitigating factor. I'm sorry, you willingly chose to drink and drive ... murder plain and simple. None of this pussy manslaughter crap.

Oh wait ... I forgot this is Otterville ... I need to see pics before I rule ... which one was hotter?

And for what it is worth, the moral of the story was "Don't go to church 3 times a week ... God will love you so much that he wants you in Heaven ... NOW."

Detroit and Flint still miraculously counterbalances all of those

Tallahassee and Hollywood are small little pissholes, odd they made that list.
